"It's true that the world in which you grew up was not kind...but it was not your enemy. There's already a key in the lock that holds you. All you need do now is open it."Wow. If you like Harry Potter or A Darker Shade of Magic or anything with a fantastical twist that delves deep into folklore, the surreal and makes you want to live there, this is the manga-or book-for you.Chise Hatori has lived a life of solitude. No one loves her. Her parent...

OK, this... is what I get for browsing Amazon after midnight when the gremlins are abroad, but anyway, this one is intriguing. I was looking for a counter to the latest very shonen thing I'd read, and this was.Someone once said the two ur-models for romance are Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast and this tale falls squarely into the second camp. It is also, I suspect, informed by the The Tale of Genji romance model, less known in the West. Some ...

I loved it and I do wonder what will happen next :)

Characters and settings are well drawn; the magical lore, exciting. I would be more supportive if not for the circumstances of Chise's new life. Being an ancient, nonhuman mage doesn't excuse 15-year-old prisoner bride situations. Chise's father is gone, mother dead, and relatives cruel and greedy. Her natural abilities seem to alienate her from modern society and she has sunk into such a state of lost depression--as a neglected, abandoned child-...

This is an odd little story, and I'm not sure how to rate it yet. I really like the unique magical world, and the feel of the story reminds me very much of Natsume's Book of Friends. There are parts of it, though, that feel really odd. I'm interested in where this goes, though, so I'm definitely picking up volume 2.

I really enjoyed this one. It's probably the darkest manga I've read and it's quite odd, but I couldn't stop reading. There's magic, dragons and talking cats, so that's cool! I liked the protagonist and I'm intrigued to see where the story goes from here, especially with that ending. Bring on volume 2!

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...We first meet Chise, chained by the neck and wrists being passed over to her new owner, a bone-headed mage whose name she learns later is Elias. A penniless orphan sold on the black market she learns about herself, the magical world filled with fairies and other fantastical creatures as well as what it means to be a part of a family. Her new life as a mage's apprentice is ...

Finished this after a second attempt because the anime seemed not to be showing many signs of what bothered me initially (see original review attached at the very bottom). I still feel a bit creeped out over the early bath scene, and I'm not entirely comfortable with the relationship between Chise and Elias, but their world is an intriguing one, even if I never want to be in a romantic relationship like theirs. You want to know what actually sold ...

It's not so bad but I find it boring.

Such a lovely and wonderful Manga. I was intrigued by the Cover and Name and wasn‘t let down. The Style and Story is simply amazing, it‘s really fascinating. I love how detailed everything is drawn and that you get a very deep insight in the world Kore Yamazaki created here. I‘m excited to see what will happen in the second Manga. ...ah! And I also loved the cute Scribbles from the drawer between the Chapters.

[3.5 Stars] This was a really fun and magical start to a manga series. There is some darkness there for sure, and I think I liked that even more. I can tell there is going to be so much to come. So many lovely dark and bright and sad and happy stories. This reminded me a little bit of XXXholic. Not sure why, but it had a similar tone in my opinion. The one thing that did rub me the wrong way ever so slightly is the whole bride thing. Like really?...

I think I just found a new manga to get hooked on after getting bored of Say I Love You and dropping it on volume 10.

A fifteen-year-old girl is sold at a slave market, bought by an ancient (and super magical) pervert who intends to marry her. This magical pedophile has an animal skull for a head, which is never explained in the book, but after he rips off the girl's clothes in a semi-violent bathing scene, he decides that it's an excellent time to announce he will marry her. Published in 2014, I became aware of this book because "The Ancient Magus' Bride" has b...

I picked this up mainly because look at that beautiful character design. I’m a huge fan of ‘monstrous fae’ and this manga does not disappoint. Beautiful art, a surprisingly dark and questioning storyline and great characters. This book was a really wonderful surprise and I’m glad that I found it. Chise, the main character, is a girl who is abandoned by her family due to her unusual abilities. Eventually, she ends up on the auctioneers blo...

I like the concept. There is a lot of interesting things in there and this volume is the bare beginnings. I'm rather disturbed by Chise being only fifteen years old. Reading and watching the anime at the same time is fun. Thanks to my brother for recommending it to me (the anime, though. This I decided to read myself)I'm reviewing it properly on my blog.https://inaholetherelivedme.wordpress...https://inaholetherelivedme.wordpress...

I'll admit, I don't know much about manga. I don't read it enough to say I am familiar with it. A friend gave me the first three books in this series, and the illustrations are intriguing and the plot is interesting. I find it a little hard to follow (but let's be real, I also realized I was reading it wrong in some places.I'll read the other 2, because this was recommended by a dear friend, and I need practice reading these.

A solid start to an interesting fantasy Manga. This kind of gave me monstress vibes, not so much from the story but it had a few similar aspects. +talking cats

Ancient Magus Bride is a unique story. It is a sweet story, yes, but also much darker and more serious than some might think given the description. Not dark as in "dark and edgy", but not a sweet My Love Story either.I've read the plot described as some Welsh mythology and Lovecraft (minimal as it is still a very happy and - sometimes - whimsical story) mixed together with a romantic subplot.Basically the story takes place in England where a stra...

A story like The Ancient Magus' Bride is why I read manga. Manga can be such a powerful medium for storytelling, conveying a story through both text and art, and every so often I come across a true gem of the medium, such as this one.An inhuman mage buys Chise at an auction house, his object being to take her on as his apprentice mage and also has his bride. What follows is a fantastical new life for Chise as she learns about magic, the mythical ...

I liked this. It's a bit slow, but it's really good. The description says it's like shoujo-styled Pandora Hearts and Blue Exorcist. I certainly agree with the Pandora Hearts comparison, but I don't see the Blue Exorcist one so much (yet). This story centers on Chise, a super powerful magical person called a "sleigh beggy," and a mage named Elias Anseworth, who takes the former to be his apprentice. I can't say much beyond that, since for the most p...

Pros: The characters are wonderful. The fantasy world is interesting. The Ancient Magus's treatment of the Bride is respectful and more healthy than I expected. I felt very impressed as I kept reading and I look forward to the sequel very much.Cons: It has one weird unnecessary scene in it where the protagonist is told by the Ancient Magus to undress to take a bath, BUT the scene doesn't seem like it's meant to turn us on and it doesn't seem abus...
