"It's true that the world in which you grew up was not kind...but it was not your enemy. There's already a key in the lock that holds you. All you need do now is open it."Wow. If you like Harry Potter or A Darker Shade of Magic or anything with a fantastical twist that delves deep into folklore, the surreal and makes you want to live there, this is the manga-or book-for you.Chise Hatori has lived a life of solitude. No one loves her. Her parent...

This is an odd little story, and I'm not sure how to rate it yet. I really like the unique magical world, and the feel of the story reminds me very much of Natsume's Book of Friends. There are parts of it, though, that feel really odd. I'm interested in where this goes, though, so I'm definitely picking up volume 2.

I really enjoyed this one. It's probably the darkest manga I've read and it's quite odd, but I couldn't stop reading. There's magic, dragons and talking cats, so that's cool! I liked the protagonist and I'm intrigued to see where the story goes from here, especially with that ending. Bring on volume 2!

Characters and settings are well drawn; the magical lore, exciting. I would be more supportive if not for the circumstances of Chise's new life. Being an ancient, nonhuman mage doesn't excuse 15-year-old prisoner bride situations. Chise's father is gone, mother dead, and relatives cruel and greedy. Her natural abilities seem to alienate her from modern society and she has sunk into such a state of lost depression--as a neglected, abandoned child-...

[3.5 Stars] This was a really fun and magical start to a manga series. There is some darkness there for sure, and I think I liked that even more. I can tell there is going to be so much to come. So many lovely dark and bright and sad and happy stories. This reminded me a little bit of XXXholic. Not sure why, but it had a similar tone in my opinion. The one thing that did rub me the wrong way ever so slightly is the whole bride thing. Like really?...

I wasn't ready for the gory parts, that was fucked up. Had me crying for the poor cats and the two lovers, the dog and his female companion, and the Vampire faerie and the old man *sobs. I love Elias and Chise and how they learn with each other, Elias learning more to be human and the many emotions he is feeling right now because of Chise, and Chise learning how to tame Elias even though he's a real monster:) What I love most about Elias is that ...

KATZEN! DRACHEN! Oh, der Anime sieht süß aus. Okay, ich will weiterlesen.

A really nice one! Interesting background (author addapted common stories and myths on legendary creatures and placed them it (more or less) contemporary world).I'm looking forward for the 2nd book!

Magical & so enjoyable, a new series to get obsessed over!
  • LG (A Library Girl's Familiar Diversions)
This starts with the heroine, Chise Hatori, being sold in an auction. Her new owner is Elias Ainsworth, a mage with some kind of animal skull (bull?) for a head. Elias tells Chise that she’s to be his new apprentice. He removes her chains and even gives her her own room. It’s hard to believe that all of this doesn’t come with strings attached - and then Elias tells Chise that he also plans to make her his bride. You’d think that’d be the...

This is an interesting series, and I'm using interesting here to mean I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. There are parts that I really like, and there are others which are For example, I really liked the character of Elias. And I liked the creepiness he brings to the story. However, I feel like there was so much potential for this character, and Yamazaki completely misses it. I'm glad that he's so nice, but I would have liked a...

Ancient Magus Bride is a unique story. It is a sweet story, yes, but also much darker and more serious than some might think given the description. Not dark as in "dark and edgy", but not a sweet My Love Story either.I've read the plot described as some Welsh mythology and Lovecraft (minimal as it is still a very happy and - sometimes - whimsical story) mixed together with a romantic subplot.Basically the story takes place in England where a stra...

I liked this. It's a bit slow, but it's really good. The description says it's like shoujo-styled Pandora Hearts and Blue Exorcist. I certainly agree with the Pandora Hearts comparison, but I don't see the Blue Exorcist one so much (yet). This story centers on Chise, a super powerful magical person called a "sleigh beggy," and a mage named Elias Anseworth, who takes the former to be his apprentice. I can't say much beyond that, since for the most p...

The way the characters interact reminds me of Full Metal Alchemist and the way the story progresses has some elements of Mushishi's style yet it's neither of them at the same time. The art looks really good and the pacing flows except for a place or two where it's obvious that the author would have preferred a page or two more. Everything's explained at a good pace and there's explanations for magical powers that feel well thought out.The whole th...

I had never heard of this manga when I first picked it up at the library, and I have to say that it was very interesting. I really enjoyed the world that Kore Yamzaki created and the magic he has instilled in our own world. The art is beautiful!!!The concepts of mages and alchemists and where their magic comes from is something that seems to be very different depending on where you get your information (Fullmetal would have issues with this one I...

Pros: The characters are wonderful. The fantasy world is interesting. The Ancient Magus's treatment of the Bride is respectful and more healthy than I expected. I felt very impressed as I kept reading and I look forward to the sequel very much.Cons: It has one weird unnecessary scene in it where the protagonist is told by the Ancient Magus to undress to take a bath, BUT the scene doesn't seem like it's meant to turn us on and it doesn't seem abus...

The cover caught my eye as I was browsing some books and it's been forever since I've read a manga so I thought I'd give this a shot. The art is so beautiful! I love the chapter covers. This is a slow start but there's already a lot of world building going on and we're introduced to some pretty cool creatures--there's dragons and silkies and of course mages. I hate that it ended in a cliffhanger (I need the second one asap), but overall I enjoyed...
  • CJ - It's only a Paper Moon
I really enjoyed this. I like the tone, the atmosphere and the story. I like that there aren't really any silly antics or over the top fanservice (like so much of the newer mangas are relying on) and it focuses on story and character. There is a buildup and there are secrets but the story is never confusing. There are several characters to like and several moments of quiet reflection (the dragon and the tree was so bittersweet)If you are a fan of ...

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but it certainly wasn't what I got. It's now, but it's not, it's Full Metal Alchemist, but it's not, she's an apprentice, but isn't taught anything. While I am a little familiar with some alternative folklore terminology (i.e. silky), I am still confused as to what a sleigh buggy refers to. Is she a vehicle squared? Does she need a horse or something (both a sleigh and a buggy can be horse-drawn)? I do...

Intriguing! The world and mythology look fantastical and overall this manga has mythical and quirky feel. We aren't told much story in the first book actually, so I can't say a lot of it yet but definitely will read more.

Cautiously optimistic. The series opens heavily on creepy pedo elements...then turns them into an open joke. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to make it through the series while constantly wincing against getting creeped out, then reversed, then creeped out, then reversed...Other than that, the art is lovely. This reminds me of Pet Shop of Horrors--this first volume is a tour of the magical world, with some lovely dark twists to it.

Read up to Chapter 15A very interesting and original manga series, which I don't know if I'll continue. I don't really know why I stopped reading, but my interest was gone at one point and now I can only wait and see if it'll come back.Although, I did love this manga's version of Oberon and Titania.

What pulled me towards this manga was the guy on the front with the skull for a head. It intrigued me instantly. I found the first chapter very quirky and odd, but warmed up to the story as it went along.
