Black Clover vol. 1 is a promising start of a new fantasy adventure boy's manga series!I admit the story has pretty much your typical boy's manga setting: In a world (based mostly on the 18th or 19th century Europe) where everyone possesses magical talents to different degrees and the strongest mages are given knighthood to defend their kingdom, two orphaned boys from the outskirt village vow to join the rank of knights and eventually become the ...

This is really negative and arrogant of me to say, but you just can't trust the 5-star reviews of this series. I cannot speak for them, but guys, guys , there is absolutely no way in hell that this is that good. Its below average. Its not rubbish, but it's not exactly good . However, contrary to certain outlets, its not terrible (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/inter...). Its just uninspired and it takes so many bits and pieces of other series ...

I know a lot of other reviews made fun of this little bit but I’m going to do so as well. One of the characters is Marilyn Manson! Seriously, how do you look at this guy and not hear the guitar riff from The Beautiful People playing? What’s it about? There’s this boy named Asta, he lives in a world where everybody does magic stuff and wants to become the next wizard king! The problem is that he has a lack of magical abilities but he may still...

I went into this, thinking it would probably be like Soul Eater. It's not really, but I still quite enjoy it. Asta is a really fun and relatable character that has no magic in a land where magic is everything. His goal in life is to become the Wizard King - a goal that everyone thinks he will never accomplish. He may not have full-on magic like everyone else, but he makes up for it in heart, strength, and the fact that he never gives up on anyone...

I really really enjoyed this first volume!!!! The art is very good and even though the story is compared to naruto i think that the series has its own unique characteristics. Can Asta become the wizard king even though he cannot use magic?

I kinda read this entire manga (all current volumes) But I feel like it would really clutter my profile so I'm just gonna review the whole thing right here and i'll do it in terms of arcs because I feel like I'd be easier to understand.so for starters this manga is the popcorn of shounen jump.it's literally everything you love about the genre jumbled together with varying degrees of success.the plot is simple and understandable and the pacing is ...

This is packed with just about every element you can imagine from shounen: magic users, guilds, battle spells, spell books, weird odd characters, sexy puns and an immature self-confidant main character. Asta wants to become the Wizard King but he has no magic so he's trained his body with physical strength. This first volume sees him join the lowest guild filled with misfits, receive the magic of "anti-magic" and go on his first mission. We can s...

"I'm gonna protect these people!"OWRs:GenericPromisingStory: 7.5/10 (For Now)(Contains spoilers for Volume 1)Basically what would happen if Fairy Tail, One Piece Naruto and My Hero Academia had a baby and for some reason decided to name it Black Clover.A white haired kid named Asta lives in a world where everybody has magical powers. Problem is, he doesn't have any.He is, however, granted the power of anti-magic, meaning that he can nullify and r...

I loved this book a lot, it combines fantasy magic and a main character who isn't good at what he wants to be. The development of the characters and world are done really well. This is a very unique and original world where magic is a required skill, almost like a 6th scent it's an amazing way to portray magic in a book. I love the way the author made the character be bad at magic but overcome it and become one of the best at it. This is a great ...

what the heck is wrong with this manga? -_- it's not only a TYPICAL shounin manga with absolutely nothing new but also the characters are so shallow ,not well developed at all. it feels so unoriginalmaybe the author is a fan of naruto/bleach/fairy tail -maybe more- so he just decided to make something in the same style and didn't do so well .I read the available 129 chapters :\ the star is just for being magic-related story

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...This is a review of volumes 1-2 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by tr...

It improves as it goes along, but this one is really choking on shonen cliches. Feels like it was created by committee, throwing together elements from other series to create something that's marketable. You really have to be in the mood for shonen for this one.
  • Frances
I love Asta's persistence, he makes me feel like I can do anything if I really stick to it.
  • Suzanne Berget
Pretty sure Asta has an Otataral blade.

More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/ One of the benefits of having a subscription to Viz's Shounen Jump is that I sometimes read chapters from the other series I don't necessarily follow (it's World Trigger and Bleach for me!). Black Clover has been one of them - never really hooking me since I pretty much picked it up fairly far along. Now, with this first volume, I have a chance to get to know the story fro...

It's like a mix of Blue Exorcist and Fairy Tail with a bunch of characters from My Hero Academia and Haikyu!!. That's the best way to describe my first impression.Magic is everywhere in the world and everyone can use it to different degrees. The strongest is the Wizard King. After him, it's the captains of the 9 Magic Knight Squads. Then it's anyone in those squads. After that, it trickles down to mediocre and new magic users. At the bottom of th...

Asta, a very determined boy who dreams of one day becoming the wizard king before his friend Yuno. The only problem is he has no magical properties at all. But one day Asta somehow gets a grimore (which is a book giving magic users more magic abilities) with the cover having a five leafed clover giving him anti magic or other wise known as evil magic. Will he be able to become the wizard king and fulfill his dream. My favorite part is when he bea...

This manga may have very familiar aspects of other SJ mangas but, it followed a recipe that works and I love it.
  • Shiki
Classic, not-so-original, but so damn old shounen, and I love it.

Asta is annoying as a protagonist, but the series itself seems to have some generic promise.Full review eventually appearing on ANN.

3.5 out of 5 starsLately I’ve been trying to read all of the manga that have been sitting on my shelves unread for months (or longer). Shonen Jump titles come first as it doesn’t make sense to only be reading half a magazine every Monday. So, today we’re taking a look at Black Clover Volume 1 by Yuki Tabata.Black Clover is a fantasy shonen series that follows Asta, a fifteen year old orphan who is determined to be the wizard king. Of course...

Black Clover volume 1: The Boy’s Vow struck me as an interesting mix of Fairy Tail and One Piece - and ultimately, just as i enjoyed both of those, I found myself greatly enjoying this one. So thanks to the friend who works at my local library for sneaking this into my hold pile. Now let’s break it down. Asta is an orphan and your typical shounen protagonist being the underdog with the big dream. And just like many others Asta is loud, slig...

I was intrigued by this series, and the setup reminds me of Shaman King, which I enjoyed.Asta wants to be the Wizard King, he’s more determined than anyone else, only he has absolutely no magic. His best friend and rival, Yuno, on the other hand, is more gifted in magic than anyone else they know. They both try out for the magic knights, and set off on their journey toward becoming the wizard king.Asta is a bit annoying. He’s extremely determ...

Another fairly decent shounen manga series destroyed by the anime adaptation. Not all that great to begin with due to the usual various problems of shounen. Black Clover makes use of the now overplayed character trope of 'useless character has opposite power of everyone else and uses it to become powerful', however, Black Clover does succeed in using this better than most other manga with similar main characters. However, if the various problems ...

Picked up book one of this series based on a couple of strong chapters in Shonen Jump. This series launches into shonen tropes pretty quickly (hopeless kid finds his niche through sheer willpower/effort, friendly rivalry with childhood friend, being assigned a group to perform missions/assignments, all in the first volume), but wears its heart on its sleeve. Now, if only the women wore anything too...A rocky start, but I suspect once the extended...

When I first got this I was not sure if I was going to like it, and after reading it I feel like I must go out and get the rest of this series! What I liked most about this is that it is about 2 boys one who is becoming the ever more common as the hero type the and one that you would expect to be the hero. Both boys are special in their own way and very different as well, mush like how in real life every is special yet we all don't get are happy en...
