Changes is the name of this second volume, which does not advance the plot much in this vampire manga series. Makoto Okazaki is changing. His former bully Yuuki is now a friend, and he's interesting, with a sad past. The artwork is the feature of this largely wordless volume, and I like that it focuses on the images to tell the sometimes spooky story. I have heard this gets better and better, so we'll see. It does get a bit violent in this one. A...

This series just went from 0-100 real quick.Love the frenetic art when things start to go wrong. Very interesting and unique style that goes along with the story perfectly.I saw someone else compared this to Let the Right One In and it totally has that sort of feel to it.

The artwork continues to breathe life into a mostly straightforward story. Oshimi's distorted lines and impressive, dramatic spreads are more fully realized in this volume and certainly make it a worthwhile read. However, Happiness has yet to develop into anything startlingly original. The story is at its best when developing the main characters through their dialogue, although the action scenes, thanks to Oshimi's exciting illustrations, are als...

Happiness really starts coming into its own with this volume. The previous volume already had a higher quality of art compared to what little I've read of Flowers of Evil, but this one takes the cake, adding a hell of a lot more of a psychedelic flare, with Makoto's visual hallucinations brought on by his vampiric thirst for blood. The volume reaches its zenith early on, after Nunota's betrayed Makoto by setting a trap for Yuuki's bullies from Vo...

In hindsight, the strong thematic base at the heart of "Happiness" vol. 1 was what gave me hope for this series to become something great. The theme of linking sexual urges to that of a vampiric thirst is an interesting idea, however its only introduced in vol. 1 and isn't really expanded upon. It was an interesting idea, but with a sub-par story on top of it.In vol. 2 the opposite happens; the plot-line is more engaging and interesting, but it d...

[This review is for volumes 2-5, so SPOILERS]The mood is so palpable it's like a character in the series. So somber and dramatic. It's probably my favorite aspect of the story. I'm kinda "meh" when it comes to vampires, but this is a story about so much more-relationships, sexuality, sociology, family, etc. The whole vampire schtick is clearly a vehicle for other messages. But not in a preachy or obvious way at all, no sir! Yuuki's character arc ...

While I think it would be easy to find similarities between Tokyo Ghoul and Happiness. I have to give Happiness credit at how this series is doing a lot better at taking its time in building suspense. We know as the reader what is happening to Makoto. While in Tokyo Ghoul, even though Kaneki's situation was unique to this world, Ghouls were an existing race that everyone is very well aware of. In Happiness it will take the main character longer t...

I really enjoyed this volume. The characters feel “real” to me, especially Makoto. I love the way sone sections use an art style that is somewhere between Impressionism and abstract, and vividly conveys Makoto’s struggles as a budding vampire. I ended up buying the rest of the series bc I couldn’t wait to find out what happens.

first volume's a slower start, but everything starts rolling faster in the second volume, I'm pretty into it. Fans of "Let the Right One In" will enjoy this, too, I think.

The characters still are too plain but is difficult not to be satisfied just with the art and the great slow pacing.

A different take on the vampire story. I'm really enjoying the weird combo of slice of middle school life and bloodneed. Art is very interesting.

Whenever I read a book I am reading for three things really: plot, characters, and the writing it self. This is harder to do when manga volumes since the story is told through the volumes. I really started to connect with more of the characters in this volume and the story is definitely getting interesting.

This is still pretty middle range. The stylization is nice, but there's not a lot of substance to this novel, either. It still doesn't really clue the reader on into what's going on within the novel nor does it really give a lot of clues as to where anything is going. In other words, things are still developing. It's a bit frustrating when you want to know more of what is happening and can't quite get there.

The story itself is still a little tired but the art and the characters are really starting to shine!

Just when you think there's no more vampires, a guy named Saku comes in, wanting to harm Makoto. At least now I find out that the mysterious vampire girl's name is Nora.
