I ran across the show Fixer Upper when I was recovering from surgery sometime after their first season, it gave me something to dream about, all the things I wished I could do in my home, if I just had Chip and Joanna’s help. I knew they’d recently come out with a magazine, and I’d frequented their website a few times. The things that I find entertaining, endearing sometimes, are how “normal” they are. Neither comes from a well-to-do fa...

“Are you ready to see your fixer-upper?” HGTV fans know these words well. They are spoken by Waco, Texas’, most famous couple, Chip and Joanna Gaines, on their weekly television show as they are about to reveal the fruits of their labors to the homeowners who eagerly await the first look at their newly refurbished homes. The Magnolia Story recounts Chip and Joanna’s story in their own words. They tell us how they met, how they struggled, a...

This book was my bowling-ball-with-my-name-on-it gift to my wife this Christmas, à la Homer's gift to Marge in that old Simpsons episode. What I'm saying is I bought this for her, but it was really for me. Thing is, I knew she'd love it, and she did. She read it in its entirety on Christmas day. I finally got around to it just now, but once I got into it, I also gobbled it up quick. You see, we're both big fans of Chip and Jojo, the hosts from t...

I was late to the Fixer Upper show on HGTV. Fortunately, I was able to binge watch all 3 seasons over a lazy weekend and fell in love with the Chip and Joanna show. I have absolutely nothing in common with this couple - Happily single! Happily childfree! Happily a big city girl! Yet the authenticity and genuine love they have for each other, their family, and what they do, it's impossible to just not want to hug them. The book reflects their life'...

This book is much like the "Fixer-Upper" TV show that made Chip and Joanna Gaines famous -- wholesome, light, a little bit funny, and no real drama. Die-hard fans of the show will likely love the book. The basic message here is "work hard and follow your dreams. And don't forget that God has a plan for your life". If you like these two, and this sort of message resonates with you, this will be one quick read. Just know that there's not a lot of s...

"It was such a blessing. . . thriving in the middle of pain. Unless you find a way to do that there's always going to be this fake illusion that once you get there - wherever "there" is for you - you'll be happy. But that's just not life. If you can't find happiness in the ugliness, you're not going to find it in the beauty, either." ~ Joanna GainsIf there is a more gracious, talented, hard-working, joyful, morally astute, and down-to-earth reali...

I'm a huge fan of Fixer Upper, so I was looking forward to reading Chip and Jo's memoir more than I care to admit. Unfortunately, I found it neither uplifting nor inspiring - nor even particularly interesting. And sadly, it tarnished for me their Fixer Upper image as a couple - not sure I'm going to enjoy watching the show nearly as much as I used to.It's not that the book reveals heinous deep-dark secrets from their past; quite frankly, the book...

I have a slight addiction to HGTV. It’s not a constant addiction; it merely flares up from time to time. However, there is one HGTV show that I always watch as soon as an episode airs, and that show is Fixer Upper. I love Chip and Jo’s relationship, and the family dynamic they have with their four kids. I love seeing little snippets of their life on their farm and how Jo handles Chip’s endearing but exasperating dorkiness. I love how involv...

I like Chip and Joanna. HOWEVER. I have a feeling this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I thought this book made them look...not good. Whether it was Chip leaving his newborn baby home alone TWICE, tying said baby's car seat to his 4-wheeler, or buying multiple homes and forcing his wife/family to move, supposedly without ever discussing it with her,or whether it was Joanna lamenting over her tiny yard that somehow could hold a garden, a ...

Ya'll, this was awesome. Chip and Joanna are some of the most amazing people. They are just some of the most down to earth and real people I have ever heard of. This book was a wonderful glance into their busy, beautiful life. It made me laugh hysterically, (Chip has the effect on people, I imagine) and *almost* made me cry. They are just real people, with real issues, and a VERY real God! There is no romanticization, drama, or anything like that...

I would absolutely let the Gaines remodel a house for me, but this book was just OK. Like a lot of propaganda biographies written during the height of popularity, this one skims the surface giving just enough sweet and insightful information to be interesting but lacks in depth. This isn't a bad book at all, but I can't rate it higher than "it was OK" given the light on detail (at least in some important areas) and repetitive nature of the prose.

I rarely dish out five stars for anything that was written in this century but this book touched my heart so deeply, I had to rate it so highly. Obviously like the rest of society, I've fallen under the Magnolia spell. Chip and Joanna Gaines are worthy of all the praise dished their way because they quickly direct it to our Supreme Creator. I'm embarrassed to admit, but I didn't think anyone who wasn't LDS could describe how I see and experience ...

First off, I am a fan of Fixer Upper and Chip and Joanna Gaines! I loved their personality, their family values and their creativity. The book The Magnolia Story, allows to reader to travel back to Chip and Joanna's childhood, high school, college years, courtship, honeymoon and their struggles to begin their business. Throughout the book, one learns about their beliefs in God, family and community. "Go after your dreams, don't quit and don't giv...

...And they always found the exact amount of money that they needed. And they always happened to have a wealthy friend that could bail them out. And they always had a direct intervention from God. And it always works itself out in the end. And they all lived happily ever after... There's a chance that I'm too cynical for this book. I think I'll stick with their show and call it good.

Follow God. Follow your dreams. Stop surviving and start thriving. Never give up. Contentment and joy are found during the journey. This is what I got from this book, and Chip and Joanna's story was amazing. <3 :)

This was so good! I loved listening to them narrate their own story. They are hands down two of the most inspirational people on tv today. Who needs all the drama and vulgar aspects?! They prove that you can be real and not shy away from your faith in God and inspire others through being normal. Through hardships, through good times, and through each other. I love that.

I love Chip and Joanna. I can't help it. Even though I've only seen a couple episodes of their show Fixer Upper, I still feel like I know the two personally. They're some of the most realistic, honest, down-to-earth people. Their love for their home, family, work, and Jesus is evident in everything they do--a rare and beautiful find in the world of reality TV.Overall? This book was a lot of fun! Chip cracks me up and makes me wonder how Joanna do...

What can I say... I was a fan of the show the first moment I saw it on HGTV. It became instant must see TV. For me it was Chip. I had a bit of a Man Crush. I admit it. He is just a cool dude in a loose mood. The book is probably more enjoyable because I am a fan of the show... and the both of them. It really is an inspired story. They did it with blood, sweat and tears. They have skin in the game. If you like a solid pleasure read, a Memoir. This...

This was SUCH a good book! I enjoyed every second & was sad when it was over. I always liked them from Fixer Upper, I don't watch all the time or anything... but after reading this book I LOVE them! Even though this story is about their life and how they got to where they are, it is packed with life lessons. I found myself really thinking about my own decisions and if fear is holding me back from certain things.. etc. It is not a self-help book b...

I love reading biographies, and this one was especially fun since it's about a hilarious, dynamic couple. One of my favorite things was seeing how the different backgrounds, personalities, and skills God gave them ended up being tailor-made for each other. I've watched some of their show, so it was fun to see the different stages their business morphed through. (I didn't even know about Magnolia Homes! I'm gonna have to look up pictures.) Even th...

If you aren't a HUGE fan of these two when you start this book, you definitely will be by the time you finish. I laughed (a lot), I cried, i just plain enjoyed this. I had heard of Joanna Gaines, but to be honest, I'd only watched about 10 minutes of one episode of their show one day when my husband had it on. But I felt like I needed to find out more about them because everyone seemed to love them so much. I'll definitely be watching the show no...

These two hard-working go-getters are truly inspiring! There are just so many great things to say about this book I don't know where to start .. What a journey where creativity, artistry, and entrepreneurial souls shine and unexpected dreams come true. Bravo to those in life who listen to their hearts and live life so authentically, generously, and beautifully thoroughly!

Sometimes you look at a piece of furniture or an old clock or a piece of artwork---whatever it might be---and you're just drawn to it. You think, Why do I love that piece? Well, chances are it's because it reminds you of something---something from history, something from childhood, maybe even something you lost, This can be true whether the piece is extremely unique and one-of-a-kind or just plain classic. This is my first attempt at a review fo...

5 StarsWow, this book was really inspiring. I loved the set up of this book it seemsed like a interview where I could picture them talking. I already know some things about Chip and Joanna Gaines from Fixer Up, but after reading this book I really learned more about how they met and how they started the show Fixer Upper. I love the way they make you think more ways than one about life. I also really loved how they ended the book with "We both hop...

This couple has such a great story. Anyone who's a fan of their show ( and who isn't!) should read this book. Full review soon.My Review:How many of you watch Fixer Upper on HGTV either when it's on or On Demand or some other way? How many of you feel like Joanna Gaines could be your next best friend and you'd love to drop by the farm and sit and chat? This book is the story of how Joanna and Chip got to be your next best friend. This is written ...

My aunt loaned me this book because she found it inspiring. I found it to be exhausting. The writing is more magazine-style and it's back-and-forth format is better suited for a Rolling Stone interview or for an audio book.I'm not dogging on the success of the Gaines'; they might be down-to-earth people in real life. I just don't want to read a book in which they air all the dirty laundry of the early years of their marriage in a flippant way and...

Absolutely delightful. Inspiring. ADORABLE. If you're a fan of these two from the HGTV show Fixer Upper, we must read their story! I had no idea what a journey it has been for them, and this just makes me love and admire them even more. Even if you haven't seen their show before, and you want a nice uplifting story... pick this up. You will be charmed!

If anybody else had written this, it would have come across as super cheesy, but Chip and Joanna are just so damn likable and genuine. It discusses how they met and fell in love, how they got into the flipping houses business, and then eventually how "Fixer Upper" came to be. They relied a lot on each other and on God, but were never preachy about their faith. They just live their life the best way they know how. This is a good book for those who...
