I freaking loved it! This one is even better than the first one. Maika Halfwolf, Kippa, and Captain Ren are all together again in this one. Maika is on a journey to find something and get rid of something. There are a ton of wonderful characters in the book! I took some pictures from my book. They aren't that great but you will get an idea of some of the awesome graphics and creatures =) And they are not in order, just like my life! ENJOY! Mel ...

Monstress returns with another great installment. “Just because you are afraid you won't have anything tomorrow doesn't mean you shouldn't help people today.” Monstress is the only one out of two graphic novels—the other is Elric adaptation by Julien Blondel—that I’m willing to continue until the end. I know it will still be a while until its completion but to me, the two volume in Monstress is already better than my entire experience...

Updated review:First of all, I have no idea what previously led me to give this 3.0 stars. Obviously, part of it was not rereading vol. 1 beforehand, so a lot of the details flew over my head (b/c crappy memory), but it was more than that, b/c I had tangible feelings of resentment over the "lesser quality" of this second volume. *rolls eyes at self*I still think vol. 1 was slightly better. The ending socked me in the FEELS in a way this one didn'...

Excellent continuation from the previous volume from the brilliant Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. The menagerie of cats, lions, foxes and shark humanoids reminded me of the art in Blacksad. The story is still a little convoluted but nonetheless fascinating and engaging. Will Maika come to terms with her dual nature? The Isle of Bones was gorgeously illustrated and I loved the storyline. Only downside is that we have to wait a few more months for V...

WrensReads Review:I guess this is just way over my head. The art is phenomenal and the world seems legitmately awesome; but I just don’t know what the heck is going on the majority of the time and I am just looking at all the pretty pictures.Oh well, to each their own. I’m just going to go read things that make me smile and cry all at once and not make me feel like an idiot. WrensReads | Goodreads | Twitter | Instagram

“Cats are the great mystery, born in that space where shadow meets light. . . that borderland of dreams and death, and death and life. No door is closed against us. No secret can defy us. We exist in every world, every universe, every possibility. We cannot be denied, not even by the dead. We are magnificent, Ren Mormorian. We are fucking glorious.”—Marjorie LiuLiu, obviously a cat lover. This book may in part have been written for cat love...

Sana Takeda, you're a GOD. The graphic part of this series is so absolutely gorgeous that it works like a portal to another world. At some point while reading you feel like you're immersed into Maika's world, which is beautiful, wild, unpredictable and cruel. One feels like participating in this wicked fairy tale. So fantastic and so real at the same time. That's why phrases like "are you fucking insane?" or many other f-bombs author likes to inse...

I think I'm repeating myself when saying that I'm completely stunned, both by this graphic novel's story and the artwork. But it's true. The second volume is no different from the first - impeccable. The young Halfwolf travels further to find out what all her mother's actions MEAN, what is living inside of her and why. She is, once again, accompanied by the little fox girl and Ren (the necromancer cat). But we are introduced to new players as well...

Everything I have came from years of ruthless murder. Am I safe? No. But I love. I am loyal. And that is my redemption. Yet again, the art style murders me.And the plot has gotten even more complicated, although with less focus on Sophia and the humans. Maika is on the run in Thyria after destroying Constantine, looking for the people on the back of her photograph: her old nursemaid Catriona and an unknown child. For some reason, she's also attem...

I adore this series. I thought the first volume was great, but this one was even better. The art is absolutely gorgeous and the character designs are some of the loveliest I've ever seen, quite possibly some of my all-time favourites. Honestly, every time I picked this up to read some more, it made me want to put it back down so I could draw. Art aside, though - the story is really starting to move along and pieces of the puzzle are starting to c...

Ahoyyyyyy! We've got another humdinger of an instalment in Majorie Liu & Sana Takeda's Monstress series! I previously loved Monstress, Vol. 1: Awakening, and was hopeful that the subsequent volume would continue the momentum gathered in the opening salvo of Maika Halfwolf's violent journey through a brilliantly realized, steampunk-infused, feminist fantasy world. Luckily, Monstress Vol. 2: The Blood not only continues the epic tale, but deepens t...

I read this book in single issues as there was no way I was going to wait for the TPB to come out. It's just that freaking good. This go around our story takes us out to sea and it's all just as breathtaking and original as the first book that came before it. The world-building in this series is PHENOMENAL and every single issue builds things up and up and up and up...and holy shit I love this story.I don't even really know what to say. Go pick up...

4,5 It's in your blood, baby Stars Everything is more in this volume. More intricacies, more betrayals, more complots, more enemies, more revelations that only lead to even more questions, more hidden players, more hatred and death, more horror and revenge, more anthropomorphic animals, more of the Cats and the Courts. More absolutely stunning art too.Maika seems to become tougher and harder, sometimes too impulsive, I worry about her soul. She n...

”Everything I have came from years of ruthless murder. Am I safe? No. But I love. I am loyal. And that is my redemption. If it is so for me…then why not you?”No one would ever describe Maika Halfwolf as warm and cuddly, that’s for sure. In fact, she might benefit from reading How To Make Friends And Influence People!. She’d probably just shove the book down someone’s throat and call it a day. That’s okay though because she lives in ...

Ok, ok.I did so much better this time.I made an effort to not stare at the pages for hours on end but, instead, forced myself to read the story. It's pretty interesting. Our lovely, god-armed anti-hero is learning about friendship (but not really) and that maybe revenge isn't all it's cracked up to be, that it's really a lot of work and not a lot of satisfaction. But there are pirate tigers! Swoon! And a pirate shark! I'm not big on sharks because t...

Ugh, this comic is SO QUALITY. I love the depth to the worldbuilding and how there's so much going on that pretty much requires you to slow down and spend some time in this world with these characters. The writing is gutting, the art is superb, I cannot wait for the next volume. *__*

4.5/5 starsWhat a ride! This second installment of Monstress introduces new characters, deepens the world and adds to the air of mystery surrounding our main protagonist, Maika Halfwolf. While Volume 1 focused on introducing the world and building up the stakes, Volume 2 creates some much needed consistency and smooths out many of the more confusing aspects to this story. What makes this series stand high above the rest? The overall quality of Li...

The Monstress graphic novel series is truly epic, in every sense of the word. I just adore these comics so much.Volume 2, in particular, focuses on Maika's relationship with her mother. It's truly heartbreaking, and I appreciated what Marjorie Lui had to say about parenting, abuse and love. I continued to fall in love with the characters in this volume as well. Maika is badass and takes no shit from anyone, including the monster living inside her...

"To quote the poets ... it is possible to drown in information ... and die for lack of wisdom."I adore this graphic novel series and tore through this volume, though I did go back and flip through it more slowly so as to better savor the art. The art is fantastic and might be some of the best I've ever seen in a comic. Combine that with a wonderful story and color me delighted. We get to meet a whole new cast of characters, and learning more abou...

The art is amazing, the basic idea of the plot is nothing new, but it's being masterfully unfolded and keeps you engaged, and there is a predominantly female and diverse cast. We learned more about this fantasy world and its history, the character development was great and the answers we got, plot-wise, were just to whet your appetite. There is no doubt I'll continue with the third volume. However, there are some things in this that I can't get b...

Still not the easiest comic to follow, but I'm enjoying it. The story is very complicated and I'm not sure I entirely understand it, but the artwork throughout is great and I have to say that even Kippa is growing on me (wasn't too excited about the cute little fox girl the first time out, but I have a sense she's going to be important to this story). Looking forward to volume 3.

I feel like this series is just getting more confusing the longer it goes, and I am less and less interested. It also continues to be overly bleak with no humor at all to lighten it up. The art continues to be gorgeous.I don't know, maybe it's just me.It's been a couple of months (I think) between actually reading it and writing this review, but I seem to recall a pirate ship adventure, and nobody trusting Maika at all, and the monster inside her...
