Four plus wow stars. I am in awe of Cathy Maxwell’s bravery in writing such a flawed, such a human heroine in Leonie. Only a writer so confident in her abilities can pull it off. Ms. Maxwell certainly did.If Ever I Should Love You breaks through the tried-and-tested trope of an impoverished lord having to marry a commoner heiress. By tackling a serious seldom-discussed issue, it rises above historical romance novels set in the same time period....

Cathy Maxwell has hit another home run with If Ever I Should Love You, the start of a new series she's calling The Spinster Heiresses. Three spinster heiresses are introduced in the opening pages, but this book tells the story of Leonie Charnock, who grew up in India where her father worked as an officer with the East India Company. There she met and briefly flirted with the young military officer Roman Gilchrist. But life-altering and tragic mis...

Leonie Charnock is one of the "spinsters" that is making another appearance in the ton after once again not being able to find a husband. Her family is extremely wealthy but her father is willing to give any amount that he can for Leonie to get a husband with a title. The Earl of Rochdale has just inherited his title, but he must marry someone to give him money. He sees Leonie and decides to wed her immediately. She agrees but has a stipulation t...

The Earl of Rochdale never thought that he'd inherit a title. Especially one with such a large debt attached. When he's told of the three Spinter Heiresses, he's shocked to discover that he knows one of them, Leonie Charnock. They knew each other in India and the result of one of her flirtations got him dishonorably discharged. Leonie has Very Good Reasons for not wanting to get married. But Roman decides they are going to be married and she figu...

The general formula of a historical romance novel involves a flawed hero and the woman who "saves" him. If Ever I Should Love You flips this around and gives readers a realistically damaged heroine and an imperfect hero who has to weigh her flaws against his love for her. The novel was very well paced and kept my attention throughout. I'll definitely read the next book in this new series.

This book was great! Leonie was a different character and didn't have your typical background. I liked the growth the characters had throughout the book. And of course they overcame their issues and ended up in a happy marriage. I can't wait to read the next two books! They look like they'll be just as good.I received an ARC from Edelweiss.

I truly loved this book. This story tells of many struggles we can face. Also our past can come back in our lives, good or bad.Leonie struggles, but she does so on her own. She also struggles to earn the trust of Roman, she has his love but love and trust are needed.I was so worried for Leonie, but she surprised everyone.*I received a copy from edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.
