My Dear Hamilton by Stephanie Dray

My Dear Hamilton

From the New York Times bestselling authors of America鈥檚 First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton鈥攁 revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. Haunting, moving, and beautifully written, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza鈥檚 story as it鈥檚 never been told before鈥攏ot just as the wronged wife at the center...

5 star studded stars for you Mrs Eliza Hamilton were truly a star.Alexander and Eliza met at George Washington's headquarters in the year 1780. From all accounts Alexander was quite taken with Elizabeth (Betsy and later Eliza) and she with him. Their backgrounds could not have been more varied, she the second daughter of the wealthy and well known Schuyler family of upstate New York, while he was the illegitimate son of a mother who was jailed fo...

She was the wife of Alexander Hamilton longer than she was Elizabeth Schuyler, daughter of a general, and she was a widow much longer than she was a wife. Eliza Hamilton鈥檚 story is dramatized, conflated, compressed and contains well-researched conjecture as little primary source material about her remains. However, Mrs. General Hamilton鈥檚 story is peopled with the flawed historic men and women who fought and struggled to create a nation. Prep...

You can read this and all of my reviews at Lit路Wit路Wine路Dine.Prior to reading this book, I was not wrapped up in all of the Hamiltonmania. I have not seen Hamilton on Broadway. I have not listened to a single song on the soundtrack. That has all changed, my friends. I am a believer and it鈥檚 all because of this book! I鈥檓 stalking Stub Hub and entering the Hamilton lottery on a daily basis. I鈥檓 on the verge of spending a ridiculous amount ...

First I want to say that this is a book that I was really thrilled to get the chance to read. I fell in love with the cover the first time I saw it and I was intrigued by the blurb. And, I'm glad to say that the book was just as good as I had hoped it to be. My Deat Hamilton is a massive novel, almost 700 pages and it took me around 2,5 days to read it. I was lucky enough to have a weekend off and let me tell you that it's the kind of book that t...

This book was AMAZING! I have read several historical romances detailing the relationship of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schulyer, and this is by far my favorite. Stephanie Dray captures the perfect blend of history, romance and character development, using Alex鈥檚 past as an illegitimate child throughout the novel and his insecurities to inform the choices he makes throughout his adult life. It鈥檚 so well-developed through Eliza鈥檚 perspecti...

Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, a daughter in the New York Schuyler family, was a fascinating woman. She met Alexander Hamilton when he was an aide-de-camp to General Washington during the Revolutionary War. Although Eliza had other suitors, she fell in love with the charming, handsome Hamilton and they were wed in 1780.Alexander Hamilton is portrayed as a brilliant, hard-working man who had important roles in the war and in the new United States govern...

I received an advanced reader鈥檚 copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaways and I鈥檓 so glad I did! After seeing Hamilton on Broadway a couple of years ago I, like the authors, wanted to know more about Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. Much to my chagrin, there really weren鈥檛 any books (historical or otherwise) about her. Eliza wanted to make sure that Alexander鈥檚 story was told and I was eagerly awaiting someone to tell hers. Stephanie Dray and La...

Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton was an independent thinking, courageously strong woman. Her father thought of her as the practical daughter. She says of herself ". . . if there is anything that marks my character, it's that I have never rested easily in the face of injustice." The Schuyler coat of arms motto is Semper Fidelis -- Always Faithful, Always Loyal. Elizabeth "Betsy" was faithful and loyal to her family, friends, and nation. Her father, Phi...

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. My Dear Hamilton captured my attention and my heart. 聽And that's coming from a woman who hated American History classes. 聽I wish history books in school were written this way. I might have enjoyed it a lot more. 聽My Dear Hamilton tells the story not of Alexander Hamilton but of his wife Eliza Sc...

This was a wonderful and fascinating book. It鈥檚 called a novel, and I don鈥檛 know how much was true and how much was fiction. I imagine though that it is mostly true. Since I am not a history fanatic, I knew very little about the details of the Revolutionary War, and found a lot of new information. Definitely worth reading.

I took a break from my Christian genre to read this book. What a historical rich book! I don鈥檛 know how you can read this and not desire to go dive into the history surrounding the founding of our government! Fortunately, I have had studies which already revealed the incredible instrumental role Alexander Hamilton played...and with the rise to fame of the musical Hamilton he鈥檚 someone everyone wants to know more about! And it鈥檚 well deserve...

Easily my favorite book of 2018 and I highly doubt anything will knock it out of that #1 spot. I'm left with goosebumps. Such a rich book. Chock full of history and so engrossing. If you love history, you'll love this book. I'm left respecting Hamilton the founding father but truly loving his wife, Eliza.

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads giveaway program. This was the best book I have read in quite awhile. Some of my favorite books both fiction and nonfiction have to do with the Revolutionary War and its figures so this book already had that going for it. The characters in the book are so vivid and multi-faceted. I thoroughly enjoyed going along with Eliza's struggles to understand her complicated husband and their relationship...

Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie use the voice of Elizabeth Schulyer, to draw a portrait of Alexander Hamilton, her husband. 鈥淏etsy鈥 takes the reader through her courtship in Washington鈥檚 Barracks, to her engagement and through early married life. Betsy matures into 鈥淓liza鈥 and Hamilton moves into private life after his pivotal role in founding and anchoring the new country. Marriages have ups and downs, and this one is presented in a wa...

"My Dear Hamilton" is the story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, a woman who came from a storied family who goes on to marry one of America's founding fathers. It would be easy to define Eliza as simply Alexander's wife but she was so much more than that. I have been obsessed with the Hamilton musical for awhile now and Eliza has always struck me as a particularly interesting character. It was this that originally made me interested in reading this bo...

Eliza, known as Betsy as a child, is the daughter of General Philip Schuyler. Out of all of her sisters, she is the one that is a bit of a tomboy and challenges conventions. She has many admirers, but once General George Washington's aide, Alexander Hamilton, catches her eye she is smitten. After a courtship filled with some ups and downs, they decide to marry. This is big deal, because although Alexander Hamilton is an up and coming person in so...

My Dear Hamilton was my #1 highest anticipated book of 2018 and I'm so very glad to say that it was everything I wanted and it even exceeded my expectations, which is something that almost never happens. It's the best book I've read this year! Now it's been almost a week since I finished reading My Dear Hamilton (while I'm writing this review) and I have such a book hangover from the book. I can't keep my attention to any other book I want to pic...

Thank you goodreads giveaways for an advanced copy of My Dear Hamilton.I do not hand out 5 star ratings often, but My Dear Hamilton deserves 5 stars - or more, it was my favorite book of the year! They tell the story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding of the country...

2 starsIt's not a bad book, I mean it's about America's history but I found it so boring. I wanted more juice, like more of the drama between Angelica and Eliza. After finishing the book I understand why that's not the focus but in general Eliza was too forgiving which made me not like her at all. Since the book is about her, that would explain why I didn't enjoy this one. If you love American history or Alexander Hamilton is your thing then I w...

I was worried picking this book up that it would be a disappointment after reading America鈥檚 First Daughter. I wondered if the authors would seem like a one trick pony, will they be cranking out these historical fiction novels? And though I am rating it lower than the previous book, I am happy to say it didn鈥檛 feel like it was just being cranked out. It was thoughtful, researched and done with care. I think I may have liked it less because I...

The last line of chapter one in Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie鈥檚 latest novel, My Dear Hamilton, sets the stage for this compelling novel about the forging of America: 鈥淏ut how, I wondered, could a daughter make a difference?鈥 And what a difference Eliza Schuyler Hamilton made. Not being a student of American history鈥攖he Canadian curriculum is, not surprisingly, more focused on Canadian matters鈥擨 found both American鈥檚 First Daughter a...

I've always been fascinated with Alexander Hamilton (more recently because of Lin-Manuel Miranda) but I didn't realize what an extraordinary woman Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton was throughout her lifetime. This book was brilliantly written and opened my eyes to the hardships that Eliza faced over the years. Eliza was a strong woman confronted by war, deceit, and unimaginable tragedies. However, she handled everything with so much dignity and grace....
