4.5 stars Thanks to BookBrowse and William Morrow for allowing me to read and review this ARC. Publication July 10, 2018. Although I have heard that Beatriz Williams was a good author, I had never read her before. I do have a number of her books on my TBR list however. Now that I have read one of her books, all the rest of them need to be elevated to the top of my reading list. I found her character development to be superb. The story line was we...

FULL REVIEW WILL BE ON JULY 18, 2018."Ms. Williams has written another book that will hold your interest but has a bit of confusing story line with all the back and forth. THE SUMMER WIVES is a story of the typical antics and lives of privileged families. We learn that most of the Winthrop Island families may have had money, but most of them are not happy.THE SUMMER WIVES has a great setting, good story line, and has characters with problems and ...

This could be my favorite book of 2018 no matter what I read moving forward. This is the book you recommend to a friend when they say to you, " I need a good page turner". It is full of mystery, romance and drama. It captures you from page one and never lets you down. Of course until you finish the book and you want to read more. Don't try to explain to people what it is about just simply tell them to trust you. I do advise readers to pay attenti...

This book had so many elements that worked well together and made it a book that I stayed up late to finish! There is a unique setting on an island where the class system unfortunately plays a role as we see the residents navigate summers with visitors. There is also romance (more than I expected, but it was well done) and most importantly a mystery. At times I was unsure why the author was writing about a character, but all of her words, and des...

Love, mystery and social status are all interwoven in this new tale by Beatriz Williams. The characters come to life as you flip through the pages. The various time periods and the social constraints placed on the main characters also play a very important role. Many of the lives are interwoven and Miranda will uncover all the truths to protect her one true love. I was extremely lucky o receive an advanced reader’s copy of the book which will b...

I have mixed feelings about this book.First, the writing is very pretty. It's sensual, and paints evocative pictures. I forgot I was reading about a fictional place in America, it seems very European all the way through. So it's got that going for it.The conflict is also well thought out. Miranda makes an excellent main character, and the conflict of the well to do summer residents vs. the working class plays out well. The negatives: the plot kind...

In the summer of 1951, 18 year old Miranda arrives on Winthrop Island for the wedding of her mother and the very wealthy Hugh Fisher. Winthrop Island is divided into the elite, patrician summer folk, and the fishermen or domestic help. THE SUMMER WIVES uses this setting to deliver mystery, romance, passion and murder when Miranda begins to fall for the son of a fisherman. I loved reading this advanced readers edition which will make a fabulous su...

Old money. New money. Very little money. All three are enmeshed, entangled, and some even ensnared on one island off the coast of New England, where “The Families”, as the upper echelon are known, use the area as their seasonal playground, sometimes at the expense of the Portuguese fishermen and their families who depend upon the surrounding water for their livelihood. Co-existing on this island together looks simple from the outside, but thi...

Replete with drama, mystery and steamy romance, The Summer Wives captured my attention and kept me questioning where the story was leading. Personalities are strong, and the plot moves along at a swift pace. As I reflect back over the book I realize that this could be a true life story. The characters in this novel represent life at it's grittiest level, earthy, heady and mysterious. The lives of the rich and famous intertwine with lower class wo...

I was lucky to have received a early copy of The Summer Wives. I predict this will be a favorite book of the summer and many book clubs. I will be honest and say, I almost gave up before I past the first few chapters, because I realized it was going to be a story that jumped back and forth between 3 different time periods. Normally, I do not care for stories that do this, because it can get tricky to follow. This was not the case and I was so gla...

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book, then blessed with 5 snow days in a row to snuggle up and escape to the coast. I couldn't put it down!!! I love The Summer Wives!! The story takes place on on one of those exclusive New England islands where the wealthy own summer houses and the year-round residents provide care and maintenance of the land, the homes and the people. The book features Miranda Schuyler - a young woman who ...

With a sophisticated scalpel, Beatriz Williams dissects long-held passion, prejudice, and mistrust lurking in an insular (did I mention the book takes place on an island?) community with secrets that go back for generations. Pour yourself a gin and tonic, and don’t rush this ravishing novel by New England storytelling’s reigning queen. Set in the 50s and 60s, THE SUMMER WIVES offers profound relevance for today’s times, As we ask ourselves,...

Received this advance copy in return for a survey response. Wasn't sure what to expect but it sounded interesting. I ended up really enjoying the story. I liked the 3 different stories in different time periods. You got some of the answers in the later time period narratives, but didn't know how the answers had evolved...great way of tantalizing the reader with just enough information and a few twists I didn't see coming. Clever way to tie the st...

First, a huge thank you to Goodreads for the advance reader edition of this book, which I won through a Goodreads giveaway. This is the first of Beatriz Williams' books I have read. It won't be the last. I really enjoyed the way the stories wove together, past and present. I really appreciated that I didn't see some of the major twists and revelations coming. Overall, a really good book and I look forward to reading more of Williams' work.

Old money, new money, no money. The moneyed summer families who come to the island, the locals who provide high-end services for the summer families, and the working class of Portuguese fishermen and domestic workers who provide the menial labor to allow the moneyed summer families their lifestyles. The story intertwines these groups of people as well as the varied lifestyles of each group. The story starts in 1951 when Miranda Schuyler arrives o...

Solid 3.5 stars, a good summer read. For the most part, I really enjoy Beatriz Williams books. She paints such wonderful, vivid images while telling a story. However, with "The Summer Wives," the little details kept confusing me. What year was it? Which character is this? I had to go back and read the foreword and first chapter again. Once I got about half-way into the book, then things started rolling, all the intrigue, deceit, and mystery! This ...

This book is a GoodReads giveaway win. This starts in 1969 with Miranda coming home to the island. She runs into some people she knew years ago and learns some have died, one in particular has broken out of prison. Then the story goes back to 1930 to tell more about some of the main characters. I thought this story was okay. It had one man, Mr. Fisher who seemed to be what every young female wanted. He was obliging to most. Had kids with a couple ...

YEP. Beatriz Williams delivers again with a great historical novel that delivers mystery, intrigue, romance, and a dual perspective narrative-- everything readers have come to expect from her novels. Miranda Schuyler's mother marries the immensely wealthy Hugh Fisher and brings her to the elite world of Winthrop Island off the coast of New York. Miranda is thrown into a new world, both simultaneously attracted to and disturbed by its wealth, powe...

I absolutely love her books & her writing style - how she draws you into a different time and place. This is another hit, with her trademark style of moving between timelines & character POVs that blend together in unexpected ways, that past comes alive beautifully. You get submerged in the lives of everyone on the island, the locals & the rich summer families and fall in love with them, bringing on ALL the emotions. Love, loss, pain, secrets, ...

For me personally, I will label this book as "just fine." The story line started out interesting enough, but towards the end of the book, the plot felt unrealistic yet predictable. The quality of the writing felt a bit jumpy in the last third of the book as well, it was almost as though the author was rushed to finish or wrap up the ending within few remaining pages. This book would be fine as a low-key beach type of read. Based solely on Summer ...

Beatriz Williams is very skilled at establishing and creating a time and a place, and then taking you on a roller coaster ride through some lovely twists and turns. Miranda returns to the island she spent a summer when she was 18 and hasn't returned since - when a tragedy occurs that she was linked to. Various chapters take place in the past and fill in the gaps until the final reveal at the end that ties everything together.I received an ARC fro...

I received an advance copy of "The Summer Wives" from the publisher as part of a Goodreads giveaway. That said however, my main takeaway from reading this is: "I'm glad I didn't pay for this book!" The synopsis made it sound like it would be a good story. The problem was, all the substance of the book took place on the last 30 pages or so. The remainder was just senseless drivel. With the exception of Miranda, our protagonist, the characters are ...

This another Beatriz William's book about the very rich, but it is also my favorite so far. The story jumps around in time between 1930, 1951 and 1969 as we gradually get the soap opera-ish complications and mysteries in the life of a famous movie star, her family and true love. It does make the lives of the rich seem shallow and useless for those who haven't figured out a way to contribute anything, and, like the other books by Williams that I h...

There are always places in the world where folks live and work the whole year through but that are so attractive that the more affluent came come during their most beautiful seasons, temporarily make them their own and that pack their bags and go away. The mountains in winter bring the ski chalet people, lakes in summer bring the cottage and boat people and islands in the sun bring them, too. Generation after generation they come, interact but do...

I received an advanced reader edition of The Summer Wives as a Goodreads Giveaway. As always, reading a Beatriz Williams novel allows the reader to slip into another world, to be swallowed up by the story, the characters, the narrative ambiance. Miranda Schuyler, true to her name, evokes strength and courage. She crosses lines, inspires action, and rises when she falls. Joseph, on a parallel trajectory in many senses, demonstrates integrity and s...
