2018 is the year for gothic noir suspense. In the Vines is a disturbingly creepy story set in New England, with Mary Olivia Pentecost (Mop) and her Aunt Liv Vandonbeer playing center stage. Mary Olivia and her family are one of the most wealthy families in America, dating their genealogical power back to the inception of the United States. Mop has a strong and very loving relationship with her family, but her closest relative is her "Aunty" Liv...

Holy crap! This book is about as odd as they come. The story centers around Mary Olivia Pentecost, Mop, to her loved ones and the mysterious death of her mother, Johanna, two years prior. What happened that night that her mother threw her burning body to the churning waves below? Chapters alternate between Mop and Aunty Liv, past and present, and both are telling us a dark and disturbing story that lead us to this treacherous night. The first cha...

This story is bananas. It’s like every Poe story smushed into one. And I haven’t decided if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. The timeline is a bit all over the place, present and two weeks ago (Mop) and two years ago (Aunty Liv) with many past memories interspersed. Surprisingly this works and the story feels cohesive even if it is jumping around. The writing is very atmospheric albeit a bit wordy. In fact, I think it would have made a g...

If you’re craving a super dark and highly compelling read to binge on this summer, look no further because In the Vines has all of that and much more. This was a creepy gothic read that bordered on horror at some points, it sure as hell scared me half to death and you guys know how much I love that! This is told alternately from Mop’s point of view and her Aunty Liv’s and it does jump around time wise, but everything is clearly labeled and e...

Thanks to Amazon Publishing partner I was gifted In The Vines by Shannon Kirk via Netgalley. Wow! This was such a fun, creepy, crazy read! I have a rule. A rule that is pretty stupid on my part but still, my rule. If I can’t read a book within two days, I lose interest 🤷🏻♀ Why am I like this? No clue, just my thing. Well, this gem broke my rule. With life, school, recitals, etc my reading time this week was limited. So, to my surprise I...

Sometimes a book just doesn't work for me. I want to like it, but the story just doesn't rock my boat. Unfortunately, In the Vines is one of them. I was really looking forward to reading the book, however, from the start did I feel a bit confused when it came to the story, with the jumping between present and past.We have the story from two years earlier with Mop's aunt having an affair with a married man. She's waiting for him to reveal this to ...

4 stars. What the................................................. did I just read? This book is not for anyone with high blood pressure. It is not for anyone who wants to think critically about post-traumatic stress, schizophrenia, or any other mental illness. It is not for anyone who has anything to do in the next 10 hours because you will be GLUED to this thing until it's over. This book is insane. INSANE. And I really enjoyed it.

Mary Olivia Pentecost, better known as Mop, was born into wealth. Her family hails from old money and lives tucked away on large estates in New England. All of her life Mop has been close to her Aunty Liv. That is until two years ago when her mother mysteriously died at Liv’s estate. The story of her death was that one night in the back cottage where she usually stayed, she fell asleep with a lit cigarette in her hand, which ultimately caused a...

IN THE VINES - Shannon KirkAfter two years of her mother's death, Mary Olivia Pentecost (Mop) decides to go to her aunt's estranged seaside estate and hopefully find out the truth about what really happened to her mother, and other shocking family secrets she never imagined could even exist. The book starts with a heart-thudding scene taking place in the present time, featuring one of the protagonists being trapped in a burned guest cottage and s...

Thank you so much Amazon Publishing and Thomas & Mercer for providing my free gorgeous copy of IN THE VINES by Shannon Kirk - all opinions are my own.I am literally obsessed with this disturbing, mysterious, and chilling novel. The story centers around Mary Olivia Pentecost (aka Mop), who comes from an established, affluent family in New England. She was very close to her family, especially her Aunty Liv, until two years ago, Mop’s mother, Joha...

I tried 3 times to get into this book, but I just couldn't! The premise itself is a good one: a woman dies while staying at her sister's guest house, which results in tearing the family apart. But then all the other plot points come in -- the sister is having an affair, she stalks the wife, there's a lady being kept in a barn... what? There's just too much going on. Combine that with the storyline jumping back and forth between past, recent past,...

Thank you Amazon Publishing #Partner for the free copy of this book, in exchange of an honest review.I rate this book a 4 out of 5 Stars. So, I started this in "Mop's" P.O.V. and I'll be honest here, I was so confused, but that's the beauty of this book, you read those first few pages and then you have to keep reading further to see what the hell is going on. This dark, gothic, suspense is told in alternating chapters, characters, and times, while...

I'm setting this one aside for right now. I may just be burned out on thrillers; I'm not sure. I haven't been able to connect with this one, though. The writing is gorgeous, but it's just a bit slower than I expected but. There are some mysteries going on, but they haven't kept my attention very much. I feel like things are going in circles. Anyway, I may pick it up again another day.

Received an ARC of this book in exchange for honest review! (But absolutely would have reviewed it anyway if I didn't because HOLY COW everyone needs to read this book!!)In The Vines is the best thriller I've read so far this year (and probably last year too). Kirk is by far one of my favorite authors that's emerged in the genre (and other genres too!) in the past few years and she doesn't disappoint with In The Vines. It's pretty different than ...

This book is literally a 300-page panic attack. I love books that push boundaries and this book does just that. IN THE VINES is a thriller that, in my opinion, borders on horror. The writing style is haunting and really makes you feel like you may actually be becoming unhinged right alongside the characters. The story also has a great gothic that is really thought out and fleshed out well. I love a creepy, sprawling estate setting. IN THE VINES c...

This story is about Mop, Mary Olivia Pentecost, her Aunty Liv and her mother Johanna Vandonbeer, three very close women who also happen to be in the richest family in New England. Mop’s mother apparently jumped off the cliff behind Aunty Liv’s house after a fire two years ago and Mop hasn’t seen Aunty Liv since then. Mop was very close to both her mother and Aunt, who was like a second mother to her. Mop goes through her last two years at P...

Shannon Kirk may just have earned the title of new Queen of the Psychological Thriller with her soon-to-be-released In the Vines. Though she has written other award-winning books, her first thriller, Method 15/33, is an international bestseller, and In the Vines is even more breathtaking than Method, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if she ends up on the New York Times bestselling list with this one! This book grabs you by the throat, throws you ...

Thank you #NetGalley for the advanced copy of #InTheVines...I have to say I didn’t entirely enjoy this book. I thought the plot and suspense was great but at times the book was a little too wordy and/or confusing. The beginning was a little slow for me and I struggled to get through the first half of the book however once everything started to unfold I found myself reading as fast as I could to find out what was going on! I would recommend this...

Thank you to Amazon Publishing for sending me a free finished copy of In The Vines in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. n The Vines is one dark and twisted thriller, verging on horror. I always find immensely rich families interesting in books. They lead lives that the majority of humans will never experience and it seems that with more money comes more problems. Yet they go to great lengths to keep their secrets hidden. Tha...

Every character in this book is NUTS! I don’t even know where to start. Mop (Maria Olivia Pentecost) is from an extremely wealthy family. When her mom dies tragically and her aunt shoves her aside, she becomes lost. This does little to describe this strange family. Like I said....I don’t even know where to start. And Mop is the sane one! This story is confusing, especially in the beginning. It has lots of flash backs with different narrators....

So creepyI didn't mind this book. There are some very messed up parts and I loved the ending. I was not a fan of Aunty Liv's chapters. It made the story incredibly confusing to be told in her psychotic voice. But it was a very good story in it's whole.

*Somewhere between 4/4.5*I knew from the moment I read the synopsis that this was going to be special, especially if you’re looking for something very dark/gothic. I knew from the moment one of the characters detailed a murder (where the victim was highly allergic to peanuts and the perp added crushed peanuts to their food to do it) that this was going to be meticulously and fantastically planned. Guess what? I was right! It was a bit difficult...

In the Vines is a gothic thriller-mystery about a rich, powerful family and their dark secrets. Starting out, it describes the love between Mop, her mom Johanna, and her Aunty Liv. When Johanna dies in an accidental fire, Mop is enclosed in grief, and Aunty Liv mysteriously isolates herself from the family for 2 years. Then Mops car breaks down by Aunty Livs house, and sees her for the first time. Aunty looks like an old witch, eye missing, broke...

Reviewing books is daunting – not because the writing is hard, but because when you love a book, it’s so hard not to spoil it for everyone else. In the Vines by Shannon Kirk (I am about to read everything else she’s ever written) has without a doubt been my favorite book of the summer...so far. Amazon recommended this book for me, and I hesitate to read Amazon recommendations because I haven’t always had the best luck with that. However, ...

This is the second book I've read in a week in which a family is redlining the crazy train. This was some ride and I have to sit and think about what I can and can't say because the doozies unfurled within these pages shouldn't be spoiled. This is told in three POVs and in varying timelines so the story is told by withholding secrets, fates and pertinent information to unravelling several mysteries throughout the story. It was great at keeping th...

I was excited to have the opportunity to obtain an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book through NetGalley. IN THE VINES is a twisty thriller with two unreliable narrators. Mary Olivia Pentecost aka Mop is the young niece of the other point of view character, her Aunt Liv. The family is chock full of old money, secrets, and leverage over powerful people. Liv, a nurse, is in love with a married man, who she thinks can make all her dreams come tr...

The beginning chapters were a bit confusing to me but after you read on, so many secrets are revealed. Horrible secrets. The story hops between time periods and our main character, Mary Olivia Pentecost aka MOP, is in for a world of hurt and disappointment. She is from a very wealthy family, wealthy as in filthy rich and knowing people with connections. Mop’s mother supposedly died in a horrific accident 2 years previous. In that time Mop is try...
