A wonderful story that sees Callie, a bookstore owner in small town America, being given an old copy of Felix Saltern's classic children's book "Bambi". Inside she finds the original owner's name, Annika, and also a list amongst the pages, written in German. The list seems to be of valuables such as ruby bracelets, candelabras and the like, but why are they in an old children's book? And who exactly was Annika? We go back in time to Austria in 193...

“There’s always a cost for standing up against evil…”First, one of my favorite elements of both the past and the present storylines is the significant role of children’s books in the plot. Two books in particular are key to the characters and the poignant tone of the story, but the whole contemporary thread is really a love letter to the power of children’s stories – and our memories associated with them – to anchor us and remind ...

With great skill and grace, Melanie Dobson weaves the past and present together in a beautiful story of love that goes far beyond the superficial. Genuine to the core, Hidden Among the Stars captures the painful plight of Austrian individuals beneath the Nazi regime and blends them seamlessly with equally-compelling present day characters, who, amidst their own turmoil, seek answers from the past. A master at storytelling, Melanie leaves readers ...

*I received this book to read from Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts in this review are my own.*"Please smile, Luzi."And with Max's words, I know why I allowed myself to pick up another war story and be pulled through the tears and pain of those terrible years in history. I always finish a beautiful book like this one with a gut feeling. How would I have coped in that time? How do I deal with wrong thin...

“Some books, I think, can be like cats. No matter where they’re sent, they have this uncanny ability to find their way back home.”This is the story of a book that finds so much more than its way back home. And if, as Callie Randall says at one point, tears are one of the greatest tributes of all, then I spent the last hour of this book paying it immense tribute. I cried anew for the atrocities committed under Hitler’s regime, I cried for ...

Hidden Among The Stars by Melanie Dobson is both a fascinating and a horrifying Christian contemporary and historical novel. It has dual timelines of 1938 Austria and present day America. It covers the most evil and brutal periods in history as the Nazis march into Austria. Characters and the reader get caught up in the depravity. There are no levels to which man will not sink to do evil. The reader is reminded of the famous words of Edmund Burke...

A beautifully romantic world (in all senses of the word) is crafted with Dobson's pragmatically lovely style. 1930s Austria--from opulent Vienna to the wooded sea-side Halstatt, spired with castles and surrounded by alps--- are a portrait in immaculate grace tested by the onslaught of war. The treasures hidden in the pages are of grand historical interest and I couldn't wait to seep deeper into the world Maximillian will fight (with his allies) t...

The author pretty much had me by the book blurb on this novel. I love learning (yes you can learn even though you're reading fiction!) about different time periods, and happen to be fascinated with the time period that Hitler was around. The point of view that was presented in this story - Max and Annika mainly, was amazing. It's men like Max that make you smile, with their strong exterior and soft heart. In a time that was full of violence, pers...

I'm an avid WWII Historical Fiction reader and I was drawn to this book because it deals with lost Jewish relics that the Nazis stole during their occupation. There are two story lines, one during WWII and the other in modern day but I found the story during WWII much more compelling. Callie, in modern day, was a sweet main character but there wasn't much tension in her part of the book. There is a bit of romance that is dangled for the reader, b...

4.5 stars"It's a tale of two books and their owners, stories that didn't end between the covers." Trapped inside Austria during the Nazi occupation in 1938, the lives of three families intersect in a most unusual way; the son of a castle owner, the caretaker's daughter, and a lovely violinist born into a Jewish family become life lines one for another. Annika has loved Max all her life, but Max only has eyes for the one whose music flows effortle...

I have to be honest here - this is a sad book. Immensely so.The characters' personalities, journeys and feelings are deeply woven through the pages. Added to the heartbreaking historical setting of a nation being torn, there's much to bring tears into your heart and make you question why? and how could we could have come to this?Still, the author's bravery for writing such a story is a remembrance that we are allowed and should grieve. AND we are...

From the moment Callie notices the handwritten list hidden in the text, she begins to make inquiries about the original owner. Together she and college professor Josh Nemeth are drawn into a mystery spanning back to World War II and the Nazi occupation of Vienna.Melanie Dobson has a way of drawin...

A GREAT BOOK!!! Time-slip novels are becoming a popular way to combine a historical romance story with a contemporary timeline. Authors like Kristy Cambron, Rachel Hauck, Heidi Chiavaroli , and Melanie Dobson have used them in their writing. I do enjoy Dobson's stories because they take place during World War II and the present. As a fan of the horrors of World War II, I have come to adore these stories Dobson crafts. Her newest book, Hidden Amon...

O, what history lines the pages of Melanie Dobson's Hidden Among the Stars! Read with caution, but be assured there will be satisfaction by book's end that it was indeed a good book. A book transpires back and forth between modern day and the evil days when more than life was lost, fear reign and faith sparked courage.I love the beginning of the story. I love how it's a search in a book, stemmed from the character of a bookseller, to what is hist...

This was an interesting perspective on WWII. I've read a lot of WWII era novels and this was the first one I've read where the premise was specifically more about lost heirlooms being returned to people.Timeslip novels are always a little risky. Sometimes I only end up liking half of the book and barely even skim the other half. Dobson did a great job of keeping me engaged in both parts of her book. I think it really helped me a lot how interwove...

Hidden Among the Stars is a beautifully crafted story that takes the reader from the pleasant stacks of a lovely bookstore and its gracious ladies through time to Austria and the years just prior to World War II.The descriptive language of Melanie Dobson prevailed upon this reader to take my time and bathe in the lovely scenes and word pictures. The emotions of contemporary protagonist Callie as she reads to children in the bookstore - children t...

The author has woven a story that begins in 1938 and flashes to the present eighty years later, and when we begin we know that the characters are somehow connected, but how, yes, we think one way and then another.Through the written words we experience the beautiful area of Austria, and unfortunately, also the evil that is lurking to destroy a group of people because of their beliefs.I found the bookstore charming, and could just see the rapture ...

This book was hard to read in the sense that it hurt my heart so much. Such a terrible time it must have been to live through. A wonderful book even though at times it was hard to read through the tears. I loved it.

have to say, I really enjoyed this book. The story was well told and flowed beautifully from past to present throughout the entire book. It was story not often told about WWII and I loved how it didn't focus on the concentration camps but rather on the lost treasures of so many families. It was a moving story about sacrifice, love, hope, and survival. This is my favorite genre of historical fiction to read. I have read many books that take place d...

This book was amazing! I loved the dual timelines and I loved the search for answers. WWII is one of my favorite time periods, and this had one timeline in WWII and the other in the modern day. I loved how the stories connected. I received a copy from the publisher to share my thoughts and opinions. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

There are many books about WWII and to make another book on the subject stand out it has to bring something unexplored. What this book brings is an “ownerless treasure” and encrypted messages to record what belongs to whom. Encrypted messages were also used by partisans, they had to be creative in finding new ways of communication, be it through stamps or words inserted in poems. (Explored in the book The Lost Letter by Jillian Cantor).“Aft...

I could not put this book down! From the very first page this story gripped me thoroughly. Reading anything set in such a place and time can sometimes be difficult and emotional, but I found it to be very uplifting and hopeful. I have always been interested in the history of the Second World War, so I had great expectations about this book and wow it did not disappoint! I recommend this book for all lovers of history.

The story starts off right before WWII breaks out. I have not read too many WWII books set in Austria so it was interesting to read about the Nazi Occupation in Austria during that time. Annika, Hermann, Luzia, and Max are the main characters in the story. Each of them has an important part in the story. Annika is a young girl that is secretly in love with Max Dubach- her childhood friend. Though Max is deeply in love with Luzia. - a Jewish girl....
