The Magician's Angel by Jordan L. Hawk was a super satisfying historical romance that really packed a punch. Novellas are SO hard to write, and I'm not a big mystery fan, so I was surprised at how much I liked this one. The story had a very atmospheric vibe, and I got a great sense of the time-period, the worn-down theater setting, and the seasoned vaudeville performers. Like all of the books in the Christmas Angel series, there is the loose tie-...

2.5 StarsI’m not sure what went wrong for me here, but I daresay this is the first time I’ve ever felt dispassionate about a Jordan L. Hawk story. My indifference probably stems from a couple of factors – the first being that, although I’m a huge fan of historical romances in general, I’m not really keen on the whole vaudeville scene or magician MCs. Secondly, there was a mystery/whodunit component to the plot, which took up most of the...

A murder mystery just after the turn of the 20th century brings the Christmas Angel to a small town in the middle of nowhere America and to a theatre struggling to survive. This one wasn't as sweet as the previous two have been, murder does put a damper on thriving relationship development, but it still had some lovely moments.Edward was a lovely character, staid and practical and very much out of love with the family theatre. Christopher was a ro...

I'm totally in love with this author's style. The Magician's Angel is paced and plotted perfectly and I loved how the mystery and character arcs worked together. There is something simply magic about this that really worked for me. Another reviewer mentioned reading this with a sepia filter and I think that's apt. Loved it! <3

Overall book rating: 3.5Audio Book: N/A Book Cover: 3Sadly this one did not make my heart beat fluff like the previous two. Don’t get me wrong. I did enjoy it. I liked both Edward and Christopher, but it didn’t quite have the feel of the others regarding the magic of the angel. It kinda felt as if she was inserted just to make sure there was a mention? It could be just me. And for that I apologise. It was way more of a mystery than the rest, a...

3.5 StarsWell, it's a good thing I read this before my New Year's Resolution kicks in; starting in January I'm rounding down if I can't make a good case for a more favorable rating.'Cause see, this one didn't feel very historical (despite the mention of train travel & lack of many cars, theatres and Vaudeville, etc.) and an incongruous use of "spunk" as sperm which threw me out of the story for about an hour as I tried to research the etymologica...

It's time for a little Christmas... magic? or maybe must some good old fashioned murder and mayhem!'The Magician's Angel' is the third book in the series "Christmas Angel" and it's Jordan L. Hawk's contribution to this series as each book is written by a different author. I was gifted this story by my friend Anne and as Anne will atest to, that was a bit of an adventure all it's own but we persevered and I got to read an enchanting holiday story ...

In a dying town, inside a dying theater, there is–fittingly enough–a dead body. And not one that can be explained away as a magician’s trick or a stage prop. Nope, there is a dead body, inside a trick compartment, and Christopher Fiend is in some big trouble because of it. Seeing how he is the owner of the very prop housing said dead man. With an inept policeman no doubt eager to just make the case go away, and a career-making meeting loomi...
