My friend gave me this book knowing my boring, healthy lifestyle and my issues with thyroid/metabolism. I went into it looking for something of value but not intending to follow the program. Well, after reading it I followed the program guidelines strictly but outside of the daily breakfast smoothie, I made different meals than the book’s menu section suggested. I see both a functional medicine dr and a regular dr. I was a little leery of all t...

I believe in eating healthy and was looking forward to this book. I thought it would be great to have a 10 day program of eating and exercise to get a quick start detox. I didn't realize that in order to do this I would need PGX fiber and supplements. I don't mind taking a multivitamin. But I wanted to detox to get away from all of the junk in our food! I am not interested in reading a commercial for Dr Hyman's supplements. This book should be fr...

I want to thank Dr. Mark Hyman and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway program for my copy of Detox Diet: Activate Your Body's Natural Ability to Burn Fat & Lose Weight that I won.Although I do not need to loose weight, I am very interested in eating what I call 'healthy', with more natural fruits and vegetables in my diet. I especially enjoyed Dr. Mark Hyman's common sense approach to changing diet and eating naturally. I am 94 and have always tried ...

In his book 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done, Peter Bregman suggests focusing on the one biggest issue to control your weight. For some people, this works brilliantly. If you aren't one of them, Dr. Mark Hyman uses a different premise:MYTH #7: IF YOU MAKE SMALL CHANGES IN YOUR LIFESTYLE, YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT.Don't be fooled by the title. The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet: Activate Your Body's...

Diet books abound, there actually seems to be no end to them as people search desperately for a way to be thin or healthy or a combination thereof. As long as you go for the healthy part, I don't think the thin part is a bad thing, just be aware why you're dong it.When I won this from The Goodreads First Reads Program I was very interested to read it; I had heard a bit about it and I was quite curious. Like most women I have tried every diet know...

*I received a copy of this book as part of goodreads First Reads giveaway*The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet is a great book for those who are interested in the effects of sugar on the body. The book tells you about some interesting facts about sugar and illness, why people have a hard time with weight-loss, and some changes and steps to take to a healthier sugar-free you. I have heard many of the studies and information in this book befo...

There is a lot of truth to What Dr. Hyman says in this book. I just finished the 10 day detox and really noticed a difference in my energy level. If you look at the recipes, you find you do eat carbs every meal (vegetables have carbs). This diet isn't a no carb diet, it's healing your body through real food and takes a holistic approach. I liked that every day he focused on a different aspect of living healthy (reducing stress, exercise, connecti...

Two red flags: detox and alternative medicine. Detox is a pseudoscience gobbly gook word used to sound important when applied to food and diet. It doesn't actually mean anything unless your addicted to heroin or suffering from last night's bender. Detoxing is a means of the body slowly breaking down a substance (like a drug), putting it through internal organs, and ultimately letting it flush down the toilet. The best detox for most drugs is wate...

I'm actually reading this book a second time, and I'm quite sure in the future, I'll pick it up and follow it again if I get to the point where I feel like my sugar intake has crept up and I've fallen off the no-sugar wagon. This time I'm skipping past a lot of the early details and personal stories, but all in all, this is a good read. It's very informative, yet simply and logically written. It's one of those "plans" though that requires a ton o...

Having been a 'beta tester' for Hyman's last book, and achieving some success with it, wanted to try his latest diet incarnation (which really isn't all that different from the one profiled in 'Blood Sugar Solution' - just a more concentrated approach - 10 days as opposed to 21). The problem with BOTH diets, for me, is that I can do ANYTHING for a limited amount of time, but once I garner some success, I tend to backslide into old habits of 'bad'...

Amazing data on how food is manufactured to be addictive and why you can't stop eating it. Really helpful info on effect of coffee on hormones that make you feel full and hungry. Alarming data about blood sugar levels. Followed the detox for 10 days and have lost 10 pounds (if you count the four weeks before tapering off caffeine, sugar, and carbs. I went without coffee for the first time in 40 years. It's a difficult regime to manage, but worth ...

Why do I keep reading this type of book? Diet Nirvana does not exist. Hard work, patience and persistence still are all that work. But, Dr. Hyman, who fills his books with lots of legitimate science, some comforting blame shifting and an assurance that exercise will not cure all, has written an easy to read to book that has huge nuggets of good information that aligns with some modern views on nutrition and weight control. However, he could not r...

I have never been obese or had high blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar. The reason I picked up this book was to attempt to detox my body from my constant sugar & carb cravings I had. It was time consuming & expensive to get started (I bought all the recommended supplements). I followed the meal plan as best I could with food sensitivities & did the readings, journaling, & detox baths everyday. I was never hungry but still craved sweets, ...

This book is on a long wait list from the local library so I will return it early tomorrow in case it helps another customer on their search for weight loss ideas or motivation to start a healthier diet. In my opinion, it seemed to be a big ad for proprietary vitamin supplements we can order through the author's website. The 'diet' information regarding eating your vegetables, exercise daily, avoid grains and sugar, take a daily detox bath, and t...

Well, the science reads soundly. I don't get the impression that this is a fad, although one has to be cautious these days. I do know it spoke to several conditions I have but never associated with food; nor did I see some of my eating behaviors as addictions. Go figure.Anyway, I embark on the actual diet beginning the 3rd of February. Here's hoping it pans out!

This book also tries to sell you supplements and other books and DVDs in order to achieve the goals of the book. It shouldn't be this complicated and expensive to eat a gluten-free, whole foods diet.

The book was very repetitive, so if you want to jump around, you're probably going to be fine. This book gave specific food options for each meal for the ten days. The main idea is that you're limiting your food intake, doing exercise, and reducing plenty of things that can give you bloat, inflammation, changes in blood sugar/pressure, and other problems. Overall, you're supposed to avoid gluten, grains, sugar, processed foods, beans, legumes, da...

This book is a very useful tool in fighting the effects of high blood sugar and insulin issues. It is the companion part to the Detox Cookbook by the same author. I found the information shockingly enlightening. The food industry, our emotions, our attitudes and our social circles (just to name a few saboteurs to good health) are exposed in this book as impedments to good health or contributors to diabetes/obesity- which Dr. Hyman refers to as di...

Read the book book, the first paper book I've read in a long time (I have been listening to a lot of audiobooks lately). I enjoyed the science and strategies behind Hyman's explanations, and it was easy to follow and seems to make sense. I didn't follow the diet but I enjoyed learning about it. I took a month break in between reading the first half and the second half but eventually finished... Worth a look-through.Favourite quotes:"What makes yo...

When my MD said she followed this plan for herself, I got Dr. Hyman's books from the library and read them! I base my 3-star review on the book itself, which is a fairly quick read full of scientific-sounding information. The book is very persuasive, so maybe I should have rated it higher on its persuasive effectiveness. I have not actually followed this diet, so my review does not pertain to personal results.

Deeply informative on how our body operates with food, how addictive substances plague our society, and what we can do to free ourselves from food addiction and live a healthier life. I've learned eating strategies that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Not that I've become some health nut with a perfect diet, but I'm more informed and know how to reset whenever my health is less than optimal.

Hyman breaks down the days with instructions on what to do, he provides recipes, motivational health advice, inspirational stories of actual readers/participants, food industry secrets. He informs the reader before starting the process of detoxing from sugar of possible results and consequences (always check with your docotor). He encourages journaling your process and joining an online or personal community for support.

Eh... picked this up trying to help do a bit of a sugar detox since I have been stress eating sugar and craving carbs, but found it more of a 'whole 30' type of program where you give up pretty much everything for a while (except for Dr. Hyman's recommended supplements). Didn't find it particularly helpful for what I was hoping to get out of it.

Good advice from a proI have used this book as a reference since it was first published. This is the first time I have read all the way through to refresh my memory and inspire me to cook healthy food. I am in agreement with the Functional Medicine approach to treating an individual, which is Dr.Hyman's specialty.

Another book about eating right. Basically the same as Weight Watchers only they give you a meal plan and you don't count points. Didn't read the whole thing but skimmed the relevant parts and copied some of the lists.

I didn't follow everything exactly (ie the media fast and nightly bath) I did take the PGX fiber before meals and really enjoyed some of the dinners. I lost weight and inches without increasing my activity level. This detox was a great starting point to revamp my diet.
