Rating: 5 Stars ★★★★★Witch Hat Atelier vol. 1 is one of my favorite manga debuts of the year!! Its AMAZING (▽`ʃƪ) 💕The beautiful writing, captivating illustrations, stories, & messages all came together so wonderfullyCoco lives in a world of magic, but can't weild it herself. But after magician Qifrey visits town and shares what he knows--she decides to give it a try (using a magical book of spells she was given as a kid). Now wh...

a lot more charming than I expected, it's got an aesthetic I appreciate more than Harry Potter's aesthetic, too

My favorite manga debut this year so far!Coco has grown up being completely facinated by magic and the witches who use it. All she has ever wanted is to be a witch but she knows witches are born, not taught. At least that is what she believes until she spies on a witch preparing a charm and realizes that her dream may not be as far out of reach as she thought. But a once hopeful Coco turns desperate as her early attempts at magic goes amiss and s...

[English][En español al final]“Beautiful” doesn’t even begin to cover it.I can’t help but love all the strong female leads in this volume –other than Qifrey, all the main characters are actually women. Coco is such a curious, witty girl that will surely steal every reader’s heart. She never gives up despite all the changes that may arise in the situation she’s been put in –and the love for her mother? This is such a heart-warming...

Officially one of my new favorite mangas. Witch Hat Atelier is about Coco, a young girl, who desperately wants to become a witch. However as you know, witches are born not taught. When the witch Qifrey arrives at her house and has to fix a flying carriage, Coco can’t help herself and watches him perform the magic. She learns that magic isn’t recited but instead drawn and excited by this news, she takes out her pen and magic book that she boug...

4.5this reminds me a lot of Howl's Moving Castle, in the tone and art style - very pretty, with excellent detail, especially when it comes to expressions and movement. there is something about it that reminds me of Ancient Magus' Bride as well, I think the look of Agott calls Ruth to mind, although the two characters are very very different.

This is a beautiful, fun, and exciting start to what would seem to be an entertaining new series. The art as magic concept works as metaphor, a glorious world-building detail, and based on the stunning visuals in the book itself, a reality. Strongly recommended for all ages.

The drawings are great, the characters are cute. The story is nice enough but really predictable.

old school sort of drawings, almost all girl protagonist but no sexism (so far),a girl who was not supposed to be doing magic does magic, magic is done by drawing,a huge geopolitical scheme being fomented,...what's not to like, really ?

Volumes 1-2 review:Great, well textured art, with cute expressive characters, both whimsical and exciting magic scenes, all over the backdrop of a benevolent but fragile conspiracy, with the main character positioned as possible unwitting pawn. A strong start, and I'm interested to see how the conspiracy plays out in the future.

What a pleasure! I enjoyed everything in this manga, from the gorgeous artwork with well drawn expressions, clothes and background (plus, very cute characters) to the good characterization (all the characters were interesting and most were very likable), through the compelling story. The world building was also pretty nice, with an interesting use of magic. I'm looking forward to the next volume!

This book is beautiful ! The drawing are great and reminds me of old mangas in a way. The storyline is good and we directly have action ! If you’re hesitating, don’t, and buy it.

A gorgeously-drawn, rich, engaging and endearing witch fantasy adventure manga.Young Coco is a Muggle fascinated by the magical world she inhabits. A world where it is accepted that witches are born, not taught. She desperately wishes she were a witch and could cast spells as well. But she learns the hard way how magic actually works, and who can cast spells, and what prices you pay in using magic carelessly. It is up to the handsome elder witch ...

I'm still trying to think of who the cover reminds me of but that is neither here nor there. I very much enjoyed this premiere issue of a fantasy world where witches are born not made. That doesn't stop Coco, the young daughter of a seamstress (with major sewing talent of her own) from desperately wishing to be a witch. She was even given a 'wand and spell book' by a witch at a fair which she (and her mom) think is just a harmless trinket. After t...

Full review [here].---The blurb on the back of the manga is actually better than the goodreads one (for once)"Meet young Coco, curious and bright, and desperate to know how magic’s wrought, but witches keep their secrets hidden tight, and witches, Coco knows, are born, not taught. Then one day Coco spies upon a witch,as he prepares the charms for which she yearns. And sees that, like her skill with thread and stitch, the truth is, magic’s something...

Oh heavens, where to start? This is a gorgeously illustrated manga that would probably feel right at home with Studio Ghibli. I had heard a lot of excitement about this one and its artwork but that doesn’t mean much if the story is disappointing and thus far, it isn’t. Coco is such a sweet girl with an enormous dream and equally enormous appetite for magical knowledge. The first volume kickstarts her adventure into becoming a witch and how tha...

I saw this manga on a list of Ghibli-like fantasy mangas and to an extend it has Ghibli vibes, in finding magic in everyday things, the absolutely stunning art, not only the characters but the scenery! It's gorgeous! What's really different from Ghibli is the building of the characters. Unlike Miyazaki's witch Kiki, who is very complex, Coco from Witch Hat Atelier is very naive and simple. In fact, the whole witch squad was very cliche anime squa...
