I am reading all these depressing(ly realistic) books about climate change and the end of the world, so it is refreshing to once again experience this effervescently hopeful and positive vision of a world inhabited by a girl, Coco, who wants to be a witch. Her idea is that magic exists not to demonize and create fear, as in Halloween, but to make the world a better place, as in wicca, maybe. Thus, when this volume opens as the apprentices face a ...

I just can't stress enough how beautiful the artwork of this manga is. I truly believe the mangaka is an incredible artist. It might be partially because it's very close to my personal taste, but I also just can't find any mistake in perspective, sizes etc. as it happens sometimes in mangas; and the ink work is just astonishing. Also the story is becoming increasingly interesting and I love all the characters (even after the inevitable clichés); ...

The second book of the manga all-girl reduced version of Harry Potter was a real yawner. The girls gotta escape a dragon in a maze and then save some randos from a river that’s burst its banks. What’s the main storyline again? Oh yeah, Coco’s trying to learn magic to save her literally statuesque ma. That’s put on hold for this book! Great… So the dragon - it sounds interesting, no? But this is a very safe, very cutesy-poo kid’s comic...

6 sigil-filled stars! That ending though!!!!! :O I can confidently say that this is my new current favourite manga - the illustrations are exquisite, the characters are fascinating and slightly complex, the world-building enchanting and the story captivating!!! RTC

The four apprentices must work together to escape a maze with a dragon at its heart, giving this volume a very strong start. The relationship between the open and positive Coco and the closed and negative Agott is the core of the book, but the art is the star.

Rating: 5 Stars Witch Hat Atelier is one of the best manga debuts of 2019, this is a must-read series! The characters, story, world, magic system--everything is fantastic!! (`ʃƪ) Witch Hat Atelier Vol. 2 Review Volume 2 delves deeper into the enchanting world, delightful cast of characters, and complex, yet whimsical magic system! As Coco and the other witches escape an enchanted/abandoned city trying to escape a dragon, Shirahama wastes no time...

4.5 There is more action; the reader learns more about the magic system and the universe and a little about Agathe's past; links form between the different characters, and I just LOVE groups living together! And I still love the humour Coco brings to the series! And, of course, it's obvious, but it has to be said: the illustrations are just gorgeous!! Can't wait to know more in the third volume!

This series just keeps becoming more delightful! The magic in these pages is electric and I love watching the young apprentices reveal more of their personalities and nuances to us. There are pages within this book (as in volume 1) where I keep feeling drawn back to certain pages of artwork. The visuals in these works are truly inspiring and captivating, I love how it makes me want to sit down with my sketchbook for hours and explore the magic of...

[English][En español al final]This volume focuses on Agete, a character I loved from the very beginning of the series. She is incredibly intelligent and seems to take her studies quite seriously. However, it is not her but Coco that comes up with a solution when put under pressure, regardless of her lack of experience with magic. This is something I appreciated a lot in volume 1 as well –Coco’s experience at her mother’s shop always comes ...

This series continues to amaze both artistically and conceptually. I have no idea where the story will be going plot-wise, but I’m sure it will be worth the journey.

The detail in this manga is amazing. The story and the magic system is fun as well. Great improvisation of rudimentary magic to use in strange & practical ways.

The plot thickens. The art remains expressive and beautiful. There is intolerance in this world, and I hope Coco can steer clear of it, but that doesn't seem likely.

Witch Hat Atelier continues to be super charming, super fun, and super, super great to look at. The art! So detailed! So precise! So crisp! I can't get enough.Coco and the other apprentice witches escape from the dragon world, meet a new witch who (oddly) has been living in the same house this whole time, and help some civilians escape a flooded river. This second volume focuses more on surface-level adventures - world-building takes a backseat. ...

This series is fantastic. My only negative comment is that I felt the second volume was a little bit faster-paced than the first one, but there was a lot of action. This includes providing a dragon with a nice fluffy bed, Coco being given a forbidden gift, learning to cook with magic and saving citizens from a river. Also included a cliffhanger and I cannot wait for the next volume!

This series kills me with the cliff hangers!....but I am living for it! There is a certain character that is a bit annoying to me in this volume, but over all still really enjoyed and can’t wait until the next volume is released.

The art in this manga is jus lush, finely detailed and gorgeous. I'm still warming up to all the girls and some of the darkness that lurks in the background of this. For instance, anyone using magic without permission has their memories and magic taken from them, no trial, no defense, nothing. That sort of draconian society sets my back up.Coco, by rights, should have had her memories taken but her mentor Qifrey has protected her. However, not al...

Unless you've been ignoring bookshelves for years, the concept of a young person attending a magical school or academy is far from a new idea. To execute said concept well, the key becomes the world building and threats you want your protagonist to face. This manga, definitely continuing its break from the standard manga artistic style, revolves around Coco, a young girl obsessed with magic whom when experimenting with magic accidentally turns her...

Dragon at your heels? Try the power of friendship and magic. After being transported to a location where a large dragon resides and finding they cannot escape the 4 apprentice witches must work together to get past the giant lizard so they can disable the sigil keeping them trapped. If you haven't already devoured Witch Hat Atelier #1, go do so immediately! The inky goodness in #2 is just a continuation of the Miyazaki vibes evoked by the first volume. Plus, where #2 picks up will be extremely jarring if you haven't read #1.Coco finds herself in more trouble than an apprentice witch can safely handle. Good thing she has Richeh, Tetia, and Agott with her! More of the world gets fleshed out, and we get to meet another importan...

I am loving the life-lesson gems in this manga. Coco learns that planning and ideas are just as important as skill and decisiveness when she escapes a dragon and we get another glimpse of the evil creeper magician. While trying to learn magic she keeps falling asleep and master Quifrey shows her how to learn while doing and incorporate learning in practical ways rather than endless memorization. Because she is in fact still a Mary Sue, she is abl...

(4.1/5) I enjoyed this almost as much as the first one! The art continues to be amazing, but this felt a little bit like a filler book. The intrigue was really packed at the very beginning and the very end, while the middle was a little more flat for me this time around. Still solid, but just a bit less well paced in my opinion. Coco continues to be adorable and I am so fond of her passion for magic, and for life, and her views on friendship and....

Volume 2 benefits from the set up in volume 1, and I felt it was stronger over all as the characters become more distinct and developed, and the world develops further. Nice artwork, with a feminine somewhat kawaii/bishonen style. This series focuses on four girls, maybe around 12-14, who are apprentice witches and their master. The girls are resourceful as they learn magic. Good world building, with explanations of how the magic works, placing l...
