Cold Woods is the second book in the Northampton series by Karen Katchur. I read the first book last year because it took place not too far away from where I'd gone to college years ago. When I stumbled upon the second book in the series on NetGalley last week, I immediately requested the book as I'd really enjoyed the first one. While the two book are part of a series, you can easily read them separately, but as I always recommend, read them in ...

3.5 starsThere’s nothing like a short, creepy prologue to whet your appetite for what’s to come. One line sums it up nicely: “He had it coming”.The story follows the relationships between a group of women in 2 time lines, one in the present & one from 30 years ago. It’s clear they share a huge secret stemming from traumatic events. When a body is found in present day, that past comes roaring back & forces them to remember what they’d ...

When bones are unearthed in the cold woods of Bangor, Pennsylvania, they turn out to be those of Lester Haines, a man who disappeared three decades ago. An unpleasant, sleazy character, it was believed he'd run off, deserting his abused wife Sharon and teenage stepdaughter Trisha, who everyone thought were better off without him. However, when the forensic pathologist concludes that Lester was murdered, Sharon and Trisha are both under the spotli...

Karen Katchur nails it with Cold Woods, the second in the Northampton County series and a perfect follow-up to her #1 bestselling hit, River Bodies. Katchur starts Cold Woods with a bang, then builds the action steadily, a gradual unfolding of truths and small-town secrets among three former best friends. Dark and chilling, creepy and emotionally complex—and enthralling all the way to the shocking end.

Karen Katchur takes you on another dark, engrossing ride with Cold Woods, the excellent follow-up to her bestseller River Bodies. Friendships and loyalties are tested to the extreme, and this chilling tale had me frantically turning the pages to discover who would make it out alive.

Karen Katchur did what view authors are able to do, stump me on the ending of a book! What a journey of twists and turns into unexpected places and emotional ups and downs! Take a walk and a run with three best friends into the past and to the present that was absolutely shaped by their choices when they were younger. A great read! A could not put it down thriller!

Childhood friendships are often a touchstone in our adult lives. This particular small town cop and mystery novel builds upon those friendships, something that happened to several of the friends, and how it impacted their life choices. Strong characters and good issuing make this an enjoyable read, once you get past what one parent is.

I LOVED reading Cold Woods by Karen Katchur. Still jolted by the spin and turns of the book. Bones are found in a mountain, a cold case is reopened threatening to ruin the lives of many and all for a man who no one missed. The residents on Second Street, in a small town in PA have moved on with life or more like have ran away from that harrowing night they have tried to forget. Cold Woods is not just a cold case murder mystery. It's deeper. The ch...

I was pleased to get a copy of Cold Woods, 2nd in the Northampton County series, by Karen Katchur. In July of 1979 Trisha, her mother and her step-father move from Chicago to a small town in Pennsylvania. Trisha quickly makes friends with Dannie and Carlyn. The three seem inseparable. As time goes on secrets are kept and the girls pull apart from one another. Almost 30 years later and Trisha returns to her family home, things start to go from bad...

Cold Woods offers a different take on mystery/crime in a couple of ways. You would think the main character would play a larger role but instead, the author concentrates on the three friends and their families...and this makes the mystery more interesting. What actually happened to Trisha's stepfather? There are a number of secrets that come to light as the novel unfolds. The conclusion was also a bit unusual, but I liked it.Read in March; blog r...

Tricia's hated stepfather disappeared when she was only eighteen, now though, back home for a friend's funeral, she is middle-aged and conflicted because his remains have been discovered. She is saddened by the hostility she experiences from those closest to her but knows everyone has secrets which need to remain buried and intends to stay close enough to make that happen. This is a very good book, seen from various viewpoints and timeframes. The...

A dark, thrilling police procedural with a splash of domestic suspense, Cold Woods is chilling, eerie, and ferociously smart. The second in the Northamptom County series (the first one, last year’s River Bodies, was a bestselling hit), Cold Woods starts with a bang as mysteries and murder from past and present collide. The story follows three women who were best friends when they were teenagers. (4.5)My first book by Karen Katchur. It will not be my last. I had not read book 1, so this can be read as a stand a lone, but I would still recommend reading book 1 first, since Parker is a continuing character. I love suspense, thrillers, mystery's and of course some romance thrown in is a cherry on top. This was a dark thriller, but based on realities that take place in life, that it makes you step back an think. There is abuse, several forms....

I wasn't a huge fan of the first book in the series, but I absolutely loved this one. It's great to read a book when you are familiar with the setting (grew up close to Bangor). Loved everything about this book- the story, characters and writing style. So many twists and turns. All the characters are hiding secrets I was shocked when the truth was finally revealed about what really happened to Lester. I definitely wasn't expecting who was involve...

Detective Parker Reed has been assigned desk duty the last couple of months after getting into trouble with his lieutenant. He neglected to inform him that he had a relationship with a woman involved in his last case. Finally he is called back into the field along with his new partner Geena Brassard. It's a cold case - a skull was discovered in a wooded area - but at least he's not still stuck at his desk. The rest of the bones are dug up by the ...

This book will chill you from the first page, about a body buried deep in the snowy woods. My emotions were taken for a ride with the unraveling of each characters identity and the suspicions that grew with each chapter changed back and forth. When the bones are found years later and identified it brings back a painful history for many. Trisha's stepdad is one she always feared, and she hides deep secrets about her past that she doesn't even shar...

I did not read book one in this series, but it was easy enough to pick right up with the fast moving book two. This book alternates between present time searching for Lester's killer after his bones are discovered, and years ago when a group of young girls were best friends. While many things have changed in their lives and they have lost contact to some degree, they have the common thread of their childhood. While the heart of this novel is a my...

I won an advance reader's copy of Cold Woods from a giveaway on author Karen Katchur's Facebook page. I love a good mystery/thriller, and this book didn't disappoint!Told in alternating timelines of the past and present, the story of three former best friends unfolds to reveal what led up to a murder ("He had it coming"), what tears them apart, and what brings them back together. There are many twists and turns, and just when you think you've fig...

I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this book from the author on Facebook. All I can say is, WOW ! This book is excellent. From the first page you are hooked. Is Trisha a killer ? Are all her bad choices in life based on truth or a lie ? There are always consequences to one's actions. A body is found in the woods, but who killed him So many people to choose from..... This was an intensely emotional novel. All of the characters were so believable in all their many personality characteristics and flaws. As the story was told, the bonds between them all revealed the deep connection among them.. I started out by thinking I knew exactly what was going on, and then discovered I was completely wrong. The plot was clever. The suspense slowly built to the surprise resolution. The story is told in two different time pe...

When Tisha returns home after a couple of decades the unfinished business of the past comes to the forefront of this story. Three close friends who fell apart, or did they? People are complicated and sometimes wounds can be seen on the outside, but sometimes the worst of them are hidden on the inside. The author unravels a mystery, but who is the criminal and who is the victim? This story kept me going until the very end and I was completely wron...

I received the ARC of Cold Woods from NetGalley in exchange for my fair and honest review. This was the first book I have read from this author, I found it to be very well written. I thought I have it figured out, but was surprised by the actual killer. This was a chilling storyline, and I...

Loved River Bodies, the first in this series, and this one is even better now that we know Parker Reed a little more in this second outing. Katchur knows her neighborhood area and her characters are real, flawed and impeccably written. While the detective story is satisfying I really enjoyed the overall story of the women’s involved in this 30 year old case. You won’t want to stop until it’s over!
