This is a fun read that has a lot going for it, and I think I would have rated it higher if the dragons had been introduced into the plot earlier and if the pacing had been just a tinge faster. That said, there's an incredible world built here, and the inclusion of a main character with a stutter was done so well; it doesn't make the narrative difficult to read and isn't included constantly, but it is present enough that it wasn't inserted as an ...

Check out more reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...The BuzzDragons always get me buzzing and I've read E.E. Knight in the past and remember enjoying his creativity when it came to dragons. I was excited this was for teen readers though because I was looking forward to a lighter writing style from him.Love the title Novice Dragoneer! It brings to mind lances, war and dragons in flight! I like the cover art too. I love the dragon being the star and...

ARC provided by the publisher (Ace Books) in exchange for an honest review.Back in the summer, I had a mighty need for something light and above all, nostalgia-inspiring. Something that would give off the same general vibe as the books that first got me into fantasy. Then I saw this. It seemed absolutely perfect - dragons, magic schools, plucky underdog orphan girls, fuck yes, give me all of it. And it delivered on that. If I read this book when ...

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway. Very interesting and enjoyable read. I liked the main character a lot

Thank you to Penguin Random House for the ARC!This book has been an extremely great read. It follows a fourteen-year-old orphaned girl with a stutter who dreams of becoming a dragoneer. I know some people would read that she has a stutter in the synopsis of the book and I'm begging ya'll don't let that get in the way of you reading this book. She doesn't have a constant stutter and its not even a big thing I think it's cute, to be honest. I feel ...

Thank you so much Ace (Penguin Publishing Group) for providing me a free copy through Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.Where are the dragons?CHARACTERS:The main character, Ileth, starts as a rather naive young girl and although she matures quite a lot, she still retain some of that naïveté (which was both cute, because she saw the best in the people she met, and maddening, because when aforementioned niceness bit in the ass she didn’...

I flat out loved Novice Dragoneer! Novice Dragoneer is an extraordinarily vivid fantasy with amazing characters, outstanding world building and the enthralling ability to sweep the reader straight into Knights fantastical tale. The story follows a young orphan girl who dreams of becoming a Dragoneer. Penniless, Ileth, embarks on a journey that will change the lives of all around her, including the dragons. When this novel ended, the book hangover i...

True Grit! One thing I can say about Ileth is that she has determination, almost to the point of foolishness. Ileth is a Cinderella figure in her village with the emphasis on Cinders. She knows little but had work and nothing about kindness. As an orphan without a known paternal name and a person with a stutter, she's not only the butte of jokes, she's labeled as the daughter of a whore due to her affliction.Having idolized dragons by the actual m...

There are stories, and then there are Stories. Tales full of action, adventure, heroes, and villains. Add in Dragons and you have yourself perfection in print. This is one of those fine and rare examples that will keep you up late into the night reading and dreaming of great dragon filled adventures.

What an amazing story! I literally couldn't put this book down as I had to find out what happens to Ilith, the main character. Compelling story, great characters and dragons, what more could you want? I have to admit I was surprised that the author was male. He did an amazing job of writing a 14 year old girl. I loved Ilith, her courage and her perseverance in the face of obstacles. And what a great message, to keep going no matter what and you c...

It’s safe to say that I’m obsessed with Novice Dragoneer. The dragons talk, the world has an intensely developed history, and the central character is the kind of badass hero I wanted to root for. Check out my four favorite things about this wonderfully done novel!First and foremost: TALKING DRAGONS!I realize there are probably hundreds of books out there featuring dragons who talk to humans. For some reason, I haven’t read much dragon fict...

I really, really enjoyed this book! This is the first book in what I dearly hope is a new series. Ileth lives in what amounts to an orphanage when we first meet her, although it is stated she is NOT actually an orphan. At age seven, she meets a dragoneer and her dragon. At fourteen she runs away to apply to the Dragon Academy. She arrives on the correct day, unfortunately after the gates had closed for the night. The annual posted Academy call for ...

I can't wait for the next book to come out! A lot of questions were left answered, and I imagine those will be answered in the next book or two.I was surprised how attached I got to the characters. One of the events that happened actually made me tear up, which is uncommon for me. There are only one or two characters that are completely bad, so when characters who were both good and bad did something bad, it hurt my heart. My only problem with the...

This book was pretty incredible, and one of the few kinda dense fantasy books, though not in a traditional way, per say, but that there's 19 chapters and 500 pages. You do the math! Really great read, I can't wait to see where this series goes!

Thank you to netgalley for providing an ARC. This was my first E.E knight book, and while there were things that I tremendously enjoyed, there were many more things that I had issue with. The book started out so well. Dragons, a flawed female protagonist with something to prove, and daily “school llife” adventures— what more could you ask for? As a YA novel, I loved that the characters were more or less angst-free and that there was an abse...

I was provided a copy of this book in return for an honest review. This book is so good! The characters are amazingly well-drawn, with characteristics both good and bad. The story line is interesting. Some of the plot lines are intricate and some are straightforward. The plot twists are limited and each furthers the story in a logical way. The world is fleshed out during travel, which is nice as you don't get a data dump. I thought the book was g...

This book is...AMAZING. If you have the chance I strongly suggest the audiobook. This book is very much a slice of life but the building blocks are there to create a 5 star series and I can't wait to see how E.E Knight progresses with the story. If I had the next book or if the series were finished I would have binged it in one go. Ileth is an extremely strong female character and not in the stereotypical 'I am a badass way' but in a quiet way tha...

I had issues with this book.... first it made me stay up so late (couldn't put it down), then it made me cry (so much emotion), then up late again, then more sad/happy tears at the end! It was full of relatable characters that you really care about, excitement and adventure. I loved it!! I can't wait for the next book in the series.

A delightful high fantasy read! The author has done a fabulous job in creating this world. From the first page to the last, this story will capture and keep your attention! Dragons not only exist but are respected. Ileth is a charming and brave character. She has a stutter which makes people underestimate her. That is their mistake. The story and characters are very well written. Some feels scenes. One had me crying. You’ll know when you get to...

Half a weekend well spent I like all of this guy's books. There's one or two sentence constructions that make me pause, but the story pace is nonstop and the characters are genuine. I just wish it hadn't been so long ago that I read the other dragon books, i might have caught more Easter eggs!
  • Liz H {Redd's Reads}
I enjoyed this story and its characters; however, there was a bit too much world building inserted in between the story and character development. I'm sure this will appeal to a great many epic fantasy readers, but I did a LOT of skimming. I'm looking forward to where the author takes the story next.Full review on Redd's Reads

I've always loved E.E. Knight's writing style. It has a wonderful way of building a unique world for the reader to explore. I was rooting for the main character in this story. She came from nothing, but had a dream to fly a dragon. Her persistence helped her prove herself. She had many wonderful adventures along the way. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book. Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.Book Conf...

Took me forever to read (hurray dense books!) but I enjoyed it and now I need book 2 sometime yesterday.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book about a young girl aspiring to be a dragoneer (dragon rider) for her country. It is a long book at 489 pages, but I just kept reading because I wanted to know what would happen next. I received it as an Advance Reading Copy and am very happy to give it a high rating. This book is probably aimed for the middle-school-age.

I won an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway and absolutely loved it! Ileth, the protagonist, is interesting and likable. The interactions between the people and the dragons are delightfully complex. It feels as if Tolkien’s Smaug filled in for the dragons in Anne McCaffrey’s Dragon Riders of Pern series while still being delightfully unique. The story line moves quickly in some places and meanders comfortably in others. I will definitel...

Novice Dragoneer is the story of Ileth as she navigates the rigors and trials of the Serpentine (an academy for dragon riders) in pursuit of one day becoming a dragoneer. Written by E.E. Knight, Novice Dragoneer is a well-crafted experience right out the gate. Our lead, Ileth, is a proactive, determined young woman. She uses her substantial quick wit to adapt to and overcome difficulties, and sniff out trouble. Having a protagonist who does thing...

3.5 of 5 stars at The BiblioSantum Dragoneer feels like a book I’ve read before, in one incarnation or another. And if you’ve read a lot of coming-of-age fantasy, books feature magic or warrior schools, or stories about dragon riders, then there’s a good chance this is going to feel very familiar to you too. But that’s certainly not a criticism. I for one love a good adventure that has a bit ...

A big thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. Rating: 2/5; DNF @ 54%Ileth (14) is an orphan who has wished her entire life to ride dragons at the famous dragon-rider boarding school "The Serpentine."
